headlamp replacement advice please
This morning I replaced my broken drivers side headlamp. Fairly straight forward apart from having to be careful to transfer the circular metal fitting correctly from the broken lens to the new one (so that the bulb doesn't end up upside down!)

When you put it back in the vehicle however once you have slotted the fitting into the left side and bottom screws before tightening the right hand screw there seems to be a huge range of adjustment as the whole unit sits well proud of the aperture. The bottom screw looks as if it is the beam height adjuster and I inadvertently loosened this when I took out the lens.

As its hard to determine when to stop tightening the right hand screw does it matter as long as it looks right or do you have to have the beam properly adjusted somewhere with facilities. And if you don't get it exactly right does it have a massive effect on the angle and direction of the beam ? Thanks

Sounds like you have removed the complete headlamp unit by removing the adjusting screws rather than the 3 ring screws... to get a decent alignment put FULL beam on and drive up to a garage door or wall with a level approach or drive, mark an X in the middle of the beam on both lamps, reverse back 6 feet and adjust your newly fitted unit to the same as the other untouched headlamp. 2008 RS4 gone, 123d M Sport, and a Puma 90 XS..

Rossy - I did the same when I replaced mine with clear lens units and uprated bulbs. I thought they were adjusted wrongly, so asked MOT tester to check and re-align when he MOT'd it a few weeks later. But I don't think he bothered adjusting them, he just checked that they were legal (which they were as they were pointing at the floor! There's no way they could have dazzled anyone!) So in the end I just adjusted them myself at home with it parked in front of a wall, using the advice in this thread. I can now see far, far better than before, which is always useful, and I haven't been flashed by anyone coming the other way since I adjusted them. Simple enough to do - just use the two level screws on the lamp bezel. The linked thread explains it thoroughly. Thumbs Up 2005 Td5 | 90 Station Wagon | Tonga Green

Just changed bulbs and aligned my lights last night.

Went to a large flat car park and adjusted the flat part of the beam on one headlight to be at the right distance and then did likewise with the other (covering each headlight occasionally so as to see the different impacts the left and right were having).

Once the flat part of both beams were exactly spot on and at the right distance then I adjusted the side screw of one so that the beam profile (the uplifted bit shining on the verge) converged at full distance, potentially you may need to readjust slightly the height of one beam as you do this.

Then as a final check drove around a bit to see if the pattern looks right and also adjusted the headliamp levelling dial to make sure everything settles properly. Finally happy with all that I got out and walked 100yrds in front of the truck to check that the pattern wasn't blinding me and that both lights showed the same brightness

30 min job

I'm fussy about my light pattern and adjust all my cars over the years - including HID/manufacturer settings

thanks for the replies chaps

I've been out all day and drove home in the dark so the lights seem fine. I've noticed that the beam from the drivers light is a bit shorter than the nearside one - ie it illuminates less road. As thats what my Peugeot does and thats never been adjusted I presume this is the norm ??

Not normal in my book - I can't see any advantage in doing that. And not normal in factory-fresh cars
