Diesel Particulate Filters
I'm looking for a VW Caddy van at the moment that will be used for short journeys. The dealer advised me to get a non-turbo 2.0SD as it has no DPF that could block up.

Does anybody know if the 2.4 Puma engine has a DPF?

Also, have all turbo diesel VW Caddy vans got DPF's?

Wrong forum I think most people drive Defenders on this site! Laughing

Nevertheless I have a little time on my hands today and have used Google (wonderful tool) and it appears the DPF is a standard fit on VW Caddys, both MPVs and Vans...See under 'Performance' 'Engine Specifications' and 'Engine and Transmission' respectively.

dpf is really nothing to worry about, you just need to drive it like you stole it for 15 mins if the light comes on.

Like he said .. just need a good 'blow through' Wink

And as K9F says, no DPF fitted to 2.4 Puma's ..... the latest spec 2.2 though will have a DPF Guns and Landrovers .... anything else is irrelevant.

I agree with Dave, 2.2 Defender definitely does have the DPF.
I either read or watched something explaining how it was mounted as close to the engine as possible to heat it up rapidly on very short journey like those farmers often have

2.4 DPF - No
2.2 DPF - yes

i think you may well find just driving it hard for 15mins may not necessarily work on the LR ones Pom. it has to be a min time above a set road and engine speed, if you dont do it on time or drop speed below the threshold it wont regenerate. RRV have proved quite problematic on this front. Cheers

The dpf on puegots is more of a Censored than most as they decided to have a container full of serum (or pig Censored ) under the rear seats which has to be "re generated" every 80,000 miles. Fault up on dash and have to go to dealer and get it done, cost £700 plus!

Needless to say when mine was approaching 70k miles, it went on ebay, will never have one again.

According to LRO, land rover gave a 2.2 to a farmer doing small trips all the time to test the dpf and see if it faulted.

the ones that use the magic 'sreum' squirt a load in each time a nozzle goes in the filler. the squirt enough for a full tank load so it makes sense to refuel to full from empty each time rather than the odd bit here and there. Cheers

Does anyone know how much it will cost to change the dpf on the new defender? and will it be covered by the 3 year warrenty.

It will be covered under warranty as long as you use the car in line with instructions, e.g cane it when the light comes on.

There was a case in the news recently where a victor meldrew had a jag and went through 3 of them as he didn't cane it when the light came on. The dealer quite rightly told him to foxtrot Oscar.

It's the price we pay for the global warming myth.

My 535D has a DPF which theoretically regenerates when the engine is abouve 85C and you're running at 70mph+. It does feel odd when it starts as it's like having a miss on a petrol engine. Service life is shown on the I-Drive at 120,000 miles although that's only a guide. Drive it like a diesel should be driven; long high speed runs, and you're good. Do short runs at low speeds and it'll clog up and give errors very quickly.

When the time comes it's a £1,700 job at a stealer. That's when you remove it, chuck it on the scrap heap and run without. You do need a re-map at this point. Cost about £600 for mapping and associated plumbing. Most importantly, no more DPF.

Perhaps Alive are developing a similar solution for the 2.2.

The info leaflet that came with my 2.4 110 re dpf filters (we put them in all the info packs sir) says that to regenerate (amber light) get vehicle to operating temperature then drive for at least 20 minutes between 45 an 70 - constant speed is better, if required repeat process until light goes out. This is quite specific.

So thats a gallon of fuel or two and 20-40 minutes of your time to regenerate, if not its go to dealer in limp home mode when the red light comes on an prepare for a nice bill.

That's all rather at odds with a magazine write up which said all works ok for farmers who have been trialling it, I can't see how easy that would be finding a bit of clear enough road to drive at a constant 45-70, certainly not round here unless I'm heading up to the motorway. Sounds fine if you use for commuting though.

Wow! if I'd known about that it would have stopped me buying one, my 2.4 was only bought because the dealer was keen to get rid, what about when the 2.2 is 3 years old and has to be MOTed would you be allowed just to not have one?
