I do agree with Andy above, I think that is likely, it doesn’t produce a DTC itself, but will mess with the fuel pump pressures, which then in turn that does create a DTC.
VCV’s aren’t very expensive which is probably some good news, and easy enough to change yourself carefully. ![]() ⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |

Not common on 2.2. If it was a 2.4 yes. But without better options guess worth a try. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

Apologies for a delayed reply, it has just had a service with fuel filter changed, I’ve been researching the VCV valve and that could be it I’m reading some slightly different symptoms, mine is fine until I’ve taken it for a good drive then if I try to restart it it goes into limp mode with those error codes it wouldn’t even start the other day after a 2hr drive where it was fine.
Dose anyone know if I change th fuel Controll valve will it need programming I’m reading mixed things? Cheers |

No programming needed, I got mine from PF Jones.
It does very much likely sound like it is the VCV. It’s easy enough to do and plenty of guides on here, must be kept very clean, and a 2 step tightening process, which is not as complex as it sounds. In effect, just don't over tighten the two fixings. VCV issues, tend to be worst when cold can result in stalling and engine cut outs, and also lacking power in high gears especially 6th. When cold idle not as smooth as expected either, it would pay to clean your MAF & MAP Sensors, plus a drop of light oil on the Turbo ‘Actuator pivots as well, that just helps keep things smooth. You should be able to find the torque settings on here, if not drop me a ‘PM’ and I might be able to find them for you. TheThunderRolls🇬🇧🇺🇸 ⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |

As Dinnu pointed out, A VCV failure on a 2.4 is unfortunately a common issue , however it’s very rare for a VCV to fail on a 2.2. In fact I’ve not seen a topic where its confirmed a failed 2.2 VCV is the issue.
On a 2.4 it’s recommended that once a VCV is changed a pump learn and pilot correction is undertaken. However from many reports this is unnecessary as a new VCV is learnt over a few driven miles. As for a 2.2 I’m not sure, a couple of people have changed them, only to find the VCV was not at fault. In these cases I believe they did not need to undertake a learn of the new VCV via diagnostics equipment. Having said all of the above I suspect the issue is air getting into your fuel system. Very likely due to the new fuel filter not seating correctly. This can be because it has not been correctly screwed in or in the case of some non genuine filters poor design. I would prove it’s not filter related as your first course of action. |

Custom90. The 2.2 VCV removal and replacement procedure is very different from the 2.4
A how too was provided by member Timcat https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic86260.html?highlight=vcv Noting , that it transpired the VCV was not at fault for Timcats issue , It turned out to be a crack in the inlet manifold blowing oil residue up under the LP drain off! Which like yours generated a P117E-22 DTC Timcat may be able to provide more info if needed, however he has upgraded his Defender to a UNiMog so may not be on the forum as much. |

My thoughts are before you replace anything try and confirm a few things..
If its a non start issue when hot can you say what the rail pressure is when cranking.. it's common strategy on common rail not to a activate injectors until it sees a given pressure..ie close to 200 bar.. If reduced pressure then check the lp side from the tank pump..you would expect it to eventually start if that is running, even with an air leak on the filter..bleed it at the vent valve If all that checks then I'd turn my attention to the vcv.. I keep meaning to try a start with that disconnected but never got round to it yet.. it's a pain to get at the connector.. 😫 |

Easy to bleed the 2.2 as it has a pump in the tank. Just turn ignition to position II ( don’t crank engine) leave for 10 seconds, you can hear the fuel pump running. Turn key fully back and then repeat a couple of times.
Engine should then start . Ps was the vehicle ok before the fuel filter was replaced. just want to discount the fuel filter. |
