Re: 10 to 13"

Thanks to ThunderBobs post on his AliExpress find I was able to upgrade my 10" to a 13.3" screen today. Overall it was 1.5hrs taking my time to complete end to end. Watched the screen removal video from PowerfullUK for the disassembly. As far as the new screen goes I'm impressed with the adapter bracket which i think beats other options for retrofit hands down. Also the build quality seems to be no different to OEM and the screen resolution and color is excellent. I found with the OEM 10" Panasonic the touch was less responsive with the new aftermarket being much faster. Once installed I used my gap tool to update the car config to the 11" screen size and then performed a PIVI reset. Once everything came back up I swiped up from the bottom of the screen for the hidden menu to select 11.6". Totally improves the look of the vehicle and makes for an easy to quickly read screen while in motion. Maps and media are massively improved on the additional screen space. 10/10 from me for this plug and play upgrade.

Package contents (adapter bracket, side brackets if upgrading from 11", screen, clips, cable to program if you dont have a gap tool)

Hi LostCause - about to install mine and have a few questions.

The mounting bracket is installed first, using the OEM screws from the 10" display, and then the new 13" display is just held in with the plastic clips? If you ever needed to remove the 13" display, I suppose you just yank forward on it to release the clips?

Do you need to disconnect the battery when doing the install?

Lastly - have you ever had the black screen issue with the new display? I think I read somewhere there's a recall out for it, but I suppose it wouldn't apply with this upgrade.

ThunderBob, please feel free to reply as well with your input. Thanks!

@KeY-8
The display is just held by the four plastic clips. I have indeed removed it after installation; it requires a strong pull to to dislodge. You pull it straight out.

Disconnecting the battery is always recommended, I did not disconnect my battery when I installed mine. However I did wear a wrist grounding strap when I unplugged the original display and when I plugged in the new display. Remember the screen powers up sometimes even when you haven’t pressed start button.

I have not encountered the blank screen issue but be aware that you may encounter a blank screen if you change the CCF file before you access the hidden menu to change the internal configuration to 11.4

I don’t believe the recall would apply to the new display.

Good luck!

I’ve not had the blank screen issue either. That said there is an open recall requiring update at the dealership. The update is for “image processor A” I don’t believe this is inside the actual screen.

l actually think the vehicle interior looks worse with the larger screen. The small screen looks like it's supposed to be there rather than stuck out in front as the larger screen is.

But that's only my opinion. I am obviously in the minority as most owners nowadays want the large media screen.

At least there will be plenty of 10" screens on Ebay if mine ever fails! A bit like the steel wheels.

No, you're not alone, I agree with that, I also think the 9" fits better with the environment and is less invasive, it looks better fitted and harmonious... the 11", and I'm not even mentioning the 13" ones, take on too much importance, everything else fades into the background and everything starts to look strange and too much like tuning and aftermarket style…all in a world where everything copies, at least until now, an unnameable American manufacturer with a copied name by the way... I only recognize a point of practicality in large screens because they actually look better... but for me it's not worth the effort, and I'm not convinced by the result, so I like my 9" as it is… And it's a shame, it would have been wonderful, and unique, if LR thought of a quick disconnection system and had made it portable... it would have been a total success!!! Defender 110 SE I6 D250 23MY

Agree. I think the original screen just looked right. Never once did I think I needed a bigger screen when using it. Reminds me of those Ali Express add ons. Eiger Grey MY23 D250 SE with bits. Known as Noddy.

Can anybody who has done the Alliexpress option tell me the difference between these two screens, both from the seller Wimafun?

Option 1

Option 2

Yup, my 24MY 90 came with the larger screen and I really don’t see the point of it and it looks more aftermarket. 24MY 90 D250 HSE, Tasman Blue

The Chinese manufacture well when they manufacture for a well-known manufacturer foreign or native, but under quality control parameters, however, when it comes to equipment without a brand or control, the disparity in terms of solutions and quality is enormous. ...things that seem the same are not, but maybe they are... who knows... Or maybe you'll get lucky and an Alpine or Panasonic technician will do it with their components in his spare time and put it on the market! Who knows again? I try to avoid Aliexpress, I only do it for small storage accessories and things of little value... that can be thrown away without crying later... when we talk about a certain amount of money and especially about devices that have to be plugged into the Defender, I think about it a lot!
So, IMHO don’t think about it too much, with things from AliExpress, there's probably no difference...or maybe there is...who knows...in the end it will last a couple of months...or maybe 4!! Laughing good luck with it! Defender 110 SE I6 D250 23MY

@Hairy Dan I don’t believe there is a difference. @LostCause and I purchased the same display from the same vendor at different times and prices. To confirm you could contact the vendor directly. They normally answer within 1 business day. I’m going on my fourth month since installing it and have had no issues at all. Using the GAP tool I’ve successfully installed the MY 25 Pivi interface. The WILMAFUN product was packaged well, has an excellent mount which is much better than the factory brackets or those supplied by Simon @powerfulUK, although I’m indebted to Simon for his excellent installation videos as well as members such as @mmbanf and yourself for giving me the confidence to attempt and succeed my upgrade.

Regards,

Bob

Thanks Thunderbob for that, I have been looking at them and trying to work out what the difference was and like you I can't see one, I did message the seller but received a poorly translated message which didn't make much sense. But as I can't speak Chinese and the seller can't speak English it is perfectly acceptable and I can't criticise them for that.

I can well believe that it will be a quality item, I have bought lots of things from Alliexpress and the only item I have had a problem with was instantly refunded, I even have a 3d printer which must be getting on for 12 years old now which was purchased from Alliexpress and it still works perfectly. Cheers Ian

just to clarify, in case I have explained myself badly, I am not saying that what Alliexpress sells is necessarily bad in itself, I was only trying to say, based on your question, that it is generally difficult to know if two apparently identical products, but with different prices, are really the same or not, and I only say and I maintain, that this is difficult to know and many times it is quite an adventure to discover it, there is a lot of variability in that sense, sometimes they are, and their quality is the same, and other times however they are not at all, they do not have very clear standards...with high value products it is a risk, although you can always undo the deal and return it of course...
However, Thunderbob's experience and testimony have much more value than my own experience and opinion, it is clear that I have not bought a screen from Alliexpress and he has. Defender 110 SE I6 D250 23MY

Well thanks to ThunderBob and LostCause I now have a large screen fitted and working, screen arrived from China within a week and finally got around to fitting it today. I followed the Powerful UK video to remove the 10" screen, then using the brilliantly designed mount was able to fit the new bigger screen and get the car put back together in about 90 minutes. I opted to use my IID G4 tool to code the new screen instead of opting for the vendor to remote in and code it for me, mainly because I don't have a windows laptop. Confused

Screen looks great, is very responsive and I'm really happy with it Thumbs Up
