Key stuck in ignition
Hi all

Had a call from a friend with a 2013 Defender crew cab. The key is stuck in the ignition barrel and after lubricating with Plus Gas it still refuses to come out.

Any ideas?

Jim

I replaced the barrel on my Td5 when the same thing happened- there is an internal roll pin which had shifted slightly- probably fixable but was off to France and didn’t want to risk being stuck somewhere

Yes happened to me. With a lot of wiggling, turning the key and steering wheel it eventually released. I have since replaced the barrel as I didn’t want that happening again.

Depending on situation hot glue might be useful to tease out the existing remains of the key.

Depends on the situation of course, and such tools aren’t often to hand in that situation. TheThunderRolls🇬🇧🇺🇸

Lock assembly is fixed to the column with shear bolts. Puma access is poor so not an easy roadside repair, Td5 has reasonable access to drill the bolt heads that secure the lock

You can rotate the shear bolts with a hammer and sharp punch. Anyway I replaced mine with normal bolts when I changed my barrel. Bought the set with door locks and 4 keys, original land rover not that expensive I recall.

If you disconnect the starter battery you can then turn the key completely clockwise until it hits the stop, then apply a little more pressure and give it a little wiggle. Then fully anti-clockwise . Do this a few times while wiggling key and steering wheel. This may release the key.
