Almost broke down
Yesterday morning on my way to work a strange thing happened. It's only a 10 mile commute and 3.5 miles of that is motorway (1 junction if I go that way) as I exited the motorway and got to the roundabout i lost all power to the point I was practically at walking speed and billowing smoke from the exhaust to the point nothing would pass as they couldn't see, thankfully not that busy on an early Saturday morning.
Managed to limp round the roundabout about and a couple of hundred or so yards down the road to a safe place to stop.
As I was straightening up the car so as not to cause an obstruction everything came back to normal and I was able to drive the 5 ish miles or so to work as though nothing had happened.
I checked later that morning and no loss of coolant, oil level correct ect.
Travel to work this morning but not on the motorway and all good, I've yet to get home though haha.
As for the smoke im not sure on colour as it was dark but looked lightish grey if that makes a difference and didn't really smell fuely or oily, just like an exhaust would smell.

When did you last have a fuel filter?

Clutching at straws, I'd consider a turbo hose delaminating.

This would fit with it running ok on boost / partial boost but failing when approaching a roundabout when it would, effectively, be naturally aspirated.

Black smoke sounds like too much fuel / too little air so I'd be surprised if it was a fuel restriction, but you never know.

Of course, a stuffed air filter or the hose to the turbo would also do it, but that wouldn't happen when you were decelerating.

You said that the smoke didn't smell much. If you change your mind or it starts to smell like burning tyres, pull the intercooler and see how much oil you can pour out of it.

Any possibility of any obstruction sucked in the air intake, inc to the air filter?

A workshop glove, leaves, blue paper roll, or similar things can easily go in.

Long shot, but is possible. KEEP CALM AND Drill ON

As above. Sounds like a possible hose/intercooler has split. 2008 2.4 110 Utility Station Wagon XS.

If there was an oiled air filtre, I'd check that one.

Turbo hose split normally causes loss of engine power but not limited to walking speed.
