Did you stick down the foam or just lay it under the carpet? I'm trying to work out how not to create a total mess by cutting lots of different sections around seatbox covers and gearbox plate since it sounds like you really want it to cover all areas if poss.

You can get pre cut foam/vinyl mats from noise killer to go over the butyl later and then fit the carpet on top. I found the seatbox didn't have enough clearance to the door to fit the panels there, but I know others have.
I ended up replacing the noise killer and carpet with the wright off road matting. It has guidelines under the seat area so you can easily cut flaps to get to the battery and ECU areas. It is very heavy so having a spare pair of hands when you fit it will make things easier. I'd say the soundproofing is similar between the two options.. But I still need to swap out the solid mass flywheel and clutch as it is so noisy and I also need to improve soundproofing in the tunnel around the gearbox turret. These two issues are generating a lot of excess noise so it's hard to properly determine how effective the matting is. TBH I've been a bit distracted on another vehicle and really need to get this sorted, I have a new dual mass flywheel and HD clutch from LOF sitting in the garage so just need to book it in. Then I just have the tunnel insulation to sort out.. Helpful, thanks. Sounds like the matting is pretty good then. I see there’s both the wright off road stuff and exmoor. Both ££ though
I’ve seen people put deadening on the tunnel which I don’t really understand give it shouldn’t have panel resonance. Are you going for deadening material or just foam? I guess both if you can fit it won’t hurt |

Reason for me doing the tunnel is I have a TD5 with a full Puma interior conversion. I have used the Synchro Gearboxes adapter to shift the gearstick back so it clears the dashboard. Downside is that there are trim gaps that need filling as the gearbox turret is TD5 R380 but the foam insulation pad is Puma - all problems of my own making LOL TD5 hardtop to Puma inspired Poptop - my build thread

Related question, which is better, the butyl sound deadening sheets or the asphalt based sheets?
Locally, I have narrowed my choices down to two companies selling both. The company with the butyl sheets import them and they can do the complete truck in a few hours including the engine bay. The company with asphalt based sheets make them locally and can also install on the truck in a few hours with exception to the firewall and engine bay. Will also be replacing my carpets with Wright mats for ease of cleaning, I think it looks neater, will survive water ingress better, and dry out easier. Additional insulation is a plus as well. What do all y'all think? I always appreciate all the feedback and advice. Thanks in advance! No Better Friend, No Worse Enemy |

Apologies if I misunderstood the plan, but the butyl type products do not provide sound insulation, they just stop panel vibration and can plug air gaps (which is an important step in the process of quietening your truck).
To do the full job you need to use them in conjunction with a proper noise blocking layer using mass loaded vinyl or some similar products. See here for an explanation https://www.deadening.co.uk/pages/advice If this is your plan already then my apologies for teaching you to suck eggs! I have seen so many people just use the butyl products and not get a great result.. Looking at that site, the sound absorber stuff is interesting. Looks to be incredibly thick... where is anyone managing to fit that? I'd guess maybe on the roof/headlining? but anywhere else?
I'm trying a layer of butyl (dynamat xtreme) though not with 100% coverage... just enough to hopefully deaden and then a layer of 3-6mm CCF. |
