I have searched on here and Googled and have found loads on sound proofing and Dynamat appears to be the preferred option.
Can those that have sound proofed their defenders themselves please help me out and tell me what you used, which panels and the real word results you achieved. Also if you have used alternative brands how much success did you have. What I would like is a general noise reduction so I can chat at higher speeds 60-70. DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS, I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy |

I've had a lot of success with Silent Coat, which appears to be an identical but cheaper product to Dynamat, and generic self-adhesive closed cell foam in both my current 110...
Soundproofing Part 1 - Roof and Rear Load Area Soundproofing Part 2 - Rear Door Soundproofing Part 3 - Drivers Door ...and my old 90: Headlining and Roof Sound Proofing Rear Tub Sound Proofing and Rear Seats Part 1 Rear Tub Sound Proofing and Rear Seats Part 2 There's still more work to do on the 110 but that already done to the roof and rear has made such a difference that the rest has become less of a priority. I used Dodo products on mine. Very similar to the silentcoat stuff, but slightly better value.
I got mien from here: https://www.deadening.co.uk/collections/dodo-mat. No affiliiation, but I've used them for years and always been pleased with the service & products. My 110 is a work in progress, but so far I've done: Roof Front Doors Middle row floor. On the roof and doors, I applied: 1 or 2 coats of the Dodo mat DEADN matting 6mm Dodo Super Liner (self adhesive closed cell acoustic foam) On the floor I also added a layer of Mass Loaded Vinyl. this one: https://www.deadening.co.uk/products/dodo-barrier-mlv-2-5m-roll Next on my list are: Rear load space/floor Rear Wheelboxes Front bulkhead and floorpans. - Dash out! Bonnet I'm really looking forward to doing the read load space as i think this will make a lot of difference, especially if I do the wheel boxes. Mine only has rubber mats in the back, so I'll need to carpet (or similar) if I choose to do the wheelboxes. Most of the above will get the same treatment as previously mentioned, but the bonnet will also get a bonnet liner added. Hopefully this (combined with the bulkhead stuff) will help keep some of the transit noises in the engine bay and out of the cabin! There is a project landrover on their site too, some info here: https://www.deadening.co.uk/pages/project-landrover As modifications go, I've found sound deadening quite rewarding. Easy enough to do, can be done in small stages depending on what time you have available, and you get to notice the impact of each bit that you do. You certainly get through the products though, I thought I'd ordered enough to do everything, and I'll certainly need to get some more soon. |

I also used silent coat. Then on top was 10mm foil backed closed cell foam. The silent coat does the noise, the foam thermal insulation. Together brilliant. My TDCi 90 hard top is more car like now, well sort of, from a sound point of view. Make sure you also do the roof inc over the front. The noise from the roof just above your head is a noticeable drop after adding the silent coat. I got all my material from deadening.co.uk.

I found a youtube video which shows the decibel levels before and after intensive soundproofing. It also shows what brands and types they use and where, it's very comprehensive. At the end of the day, it reduces the noise level by 10dB (take values with a pinch of salt), and bearing in mind this is a logarithmic scale, it is a huge amount. This is what I intend to follow when i eventually get round to soundproofing!

I used the pre-cut Dynamat kit for my 110 (ordered from LR Centre) and its a very handy way to do it.
More expensive than having it in rolls, but makes the job faster and easier while still covering what needs to be done. It makes a pretty dramatic difference in sound levels, but you do get used to the reduced sound almost immediately. Roaming around ๐ณ๐ด๐จ๐ญ |

Things like dyna mat silent coat are designed to add weight to the panel stop the resonance of the panel they dont stop the travel of sound ie from the engine bay or tyres unless they are coupled with something like an acoustic foam.
I used TECSOUND SY50 which is a mass adding acoustic barrier so it does both stops air bourne sound and resonance. I did the footwells and lower bulkhead as well as the seat box and the difference was remarkable Click image to enlarge |

hi, i did almost the same things you mention here, and made one thing that i read in an old post here, that improved a lot the sounbd proofing; in a very close night, I turned on a very powerful searchlight inside the truck, and looked outside for any beam of light, and i found many little places, especially in the door seals, and in the boxes under de seats, were i could improve even more the sound proofing.
I take this opportunity to ask a question, I have a 2009 Puma, and apparently it has a good roof, but I have no idea if it comes with good insulation inside, and I don't want to disassemble it to see; Does anyone know how is the insulation on the ceiling in this model? Magoyo |

i dont think there will be any sound insulation, my 2008 hasnt got anything other than the roof lining, thats my next job.

This is correct. It's bare metal above the roof lining. Darren

Its very simple to be honest, if you have the side mouldings around windows etc they just pull off to allow the headliner to drop down.
usually the christmas tree plastic fixings get chewed up so probably worth getting some spares |
