L663 D300 Auxiliary drive belt squeal.
I’ve had this before at about 17k miles, and warranty fixed it. However at 33k it’s started squealing again.

When cold the belt is making a regular chirp, it goes silent once warmed up.

Has anyone got a picture of the installation, or a diagram of components. I think it’s one of the idler pulleys. 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV

Hi Gareth
I guess , as you already have it fixed under warranty before, that you know that JLR issued a mod a couple of years ago, to alter the start up procedure which was using the hybrid battery which put too much pressure on the belts. They sent engineers out to alter this so that the affected defenders started up via the starter motor rather than the hybrid battery. They did this with my previous D300.

That's interesting.

How do you know which starting method a Defender is using. ls there any way to tell?

If it’s starts in hybrid mode it’s a muffled sound, whereas if it’s an earlier d300 and the mod was done you will hear the starter engage and then the diesel engine sound.
My first D300 was August 21 and the mod done circa 1 year later. I now have a Jan 23 d300 which starts a bit more hybrid like…but I’m not 100pc sure as it’s presently marooned in Group 1 Chester with suspension knocking and am presently running around in an Ewok hybrid which definitely starts in hybrid mode and reserves 3 - 5pc of electric to do so.

Yes I do remember this. It involved a software update as well as new belt and gubbins.
I’m hoping it’s just the idler this time. There is an awful lot of vibration of the belt driven components when it’s running. I’m not actually sure which bit is the tensioner. As you look down the front of the engine under the coolant hose, on the right hand side there is what looks like an alternator. The pulley on that seems to be mounted to a bracket that vibrates a lot when the engine is running.
Access and visibility is poor, so was hoping to get a diagram of parts. 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV

My D250 was delivered in November 2022 so hopefully the modification was done. l've never had any issues with vibration or belts squeaking.
