I'd still block the bypass waterway. Cheers

what is the bypass waterway, the Thermostat only has a simple spring loaded valve, either open or closed, no other valve in it.

James,

Hows the stat modified or just a lower temp stat (part number) ?

I thought I read the Davies EWP pumps could be run pass through in the bottom hose (with 2x3mm holes drilled in stat to stop it dead heading) with belt pump left in situ

not heard/thought of fitting pump in top hose before TBH - but if it works .....

I have a EWP150 sat here trying to decide where it should go ...

Cheers

All stats work on that principle ..
When cold the water is just looped back to the pump from the engine..
When the water is hot enough the stat starts to open and allow some flow to the radiator from engine before returning to the pump..if it keeps getting hotter the stat will fully open and close the normal flow from the engine to pump off and all the coolant will pass through the radiator before returning to the pump..
That's what is been referred to by bypass I think..if you simply remove the stat the water from the engine has two paths available. Directly back to pump and back to pump via radiator..

In a properly functioning and designed system once the stat is fully opened and all coolant is diverted through the radiator that should maintain the engine temp within a few degrees of the max stat rating..they usually have a opening temp and a fully open temp..
So really by removing a stat all you should really be doing is causing the engine to take longer to reach its max temp if its been worked hard and causing it to run cool when not been worked.. or that's how I see it..🤔

Yep, correct. So block route from head to pump that bypasses the rad to make sure it all goes through the rad. As andy not needed on a properly balanced system, which the m57 in a def isint and the stats are of questionable quality.

Ewp top hose switched to come on when there is flow in top.

Modified mahle stat in my cases. Cheers

Sorry for the endless questions but would you be able to provide a photo of the EWP in top hose... I'm struggling to visualize how I'd fit one in the top hose as the Craig Davies pumps seem fairly adamant in their installation orientation...

Just fit so outlet at top for air to exit. Cheers

Just to add a bit more to this. I was getting higher temps than I liked when cruising on the motorway.
Low revs meant that my water pump wasn’t spinning fast enough and was seeing temps creeping up to nearly 110c on an incline. Whilst I’m sure brief periods of this is likely within the operating range of an m57, having suffered a cracked head and associated relentless overheating problems with the 300tdi that was fitted previously, I am very keen to avoid all that again. Bitten once, shy twice and all that.
I’ve recently fitted a Davis Craig electric water pump similar to JST, except I went for a smaller pump, the ewp115 with the controller.
Impressions so far having covered 300 or so miles are very good.
Because I’ve set the pump to turn on at a higher temp, the coolant temp warms up as normal, but with how the controller functions, it pulses the coolant after the thermostat opens and allows a seemingly much more controlled rise in temperatures after 90 or so degrees.
I can now cruise at roughly 1900 rpm with temps sitting at 95c firm, creeping up to 97-98c on long inclines.
More testing needed but so far very pleased with it so far Thumbs Up

That's good news.

What's it fitted in vehicle wise and what cooling pack have you got?

Mine sits a bit cooler at 65mph, 2100 rpm. Modified stat and in a 130 that's heavy.

If I sit at 60 she sits around 82deg with sub 2k rpm revs.

Ewp comes on at 86deg head temp.

Engine is 306d1 from a l322 with a mild tune, mated to a HD R380 with v8 5th and 1.2 transfer box (for now).
The pump is fitted in the top hose which then goes into an Allisport m57 specific rad and electric fan.
The pump switches on fully at 99 deg but starts pulsing way before then(10sec on, 10sec off).
The controller is currently poking out of the seat box so I can keep an eye on it but I’ll likely stick it back in the battery box when everything is settled.
Elec fan turns on at 102deg. I haven’t connected it to the controller yet and it was set lower before the pump install as I wanted to make sure everything worked correctly so is wired completely independently.
Stat is tested to start opening at 88 and has 11mm opening.
80 percent of my driving is on A/B roads, which temps normally range from 85-95deg depending on driving style, speed etc. which is a temperature range I’m happy with and seems to be what BMWs with m57s seem to run at going by popular opinion of the internet.
Revs are higher under these conditions so I think the standard pump copes better, hence having the ewp set at a higher temp for the situations where I get high temps at low revs.
I haven’t towed with it since the pump install or had any real weight but the benefit of having the controller is that it can be adjusted to fit the needs of the situation.
It will also run for a few minutes after the engine is switched off if at the set temperature on the controller.

OK, thats it.. I'm convinced...

EWP115 here I come.. Just for complete avoidance of doubt, have you got a photo of how you've fitted this into the top hose - Presume custom bracket on the wing or something to support it as I guess it sits around just behind the power steering bottle?

Not got a bracket sorted yet as my pipes are quite stiff even when warm but will definitely be sorting something soon.
