The highest mileage Defender in the UK is a Puma, although impossible to tell what has been replaced thus far or if it's the original engine!

I thought mine was quite high at 279,000 miles but it is in the minor league compared to those on that list!

Whilst quite a lot of my Defender is younger than the vehicle as a whole, virtually all the engine and attached components are original - the injectors, timing gear, turbo, HP fuel pump etc are all original. It has had one water pump, about six VCVs, and one aux belt pulley has had its bearings replaced, but from memory at the moment that is about it for the engine.

I am sure that there are many 2.4 Duratorq engines which have given problems, but by and large it is a good strong engine and will last well (there must be tens of thousands of vans with very high mileages by now) and is every bit as good as most of the engines Landrover has used in the past. in 2.4 form it is also exceptionally well matched to the vehicle as far as torque and power is concerned.

If you want a truly bad engine, look now further than the TDV6 and the Ingenium series.

By Timing gear do you mean the timing chain etc?

I was planning on getting mine replaced or at least inspected at the next service as it's now over 100,000 miles, if you are well beyond that point on the originals then I'm a lot less concerned Bow down

Have you had to do any preventative inspections or maintenance to achieve this? Craig.

Yes, I mean the timing chain etc., the front cover has never been off.

I've done nothing more than routine maintenance, but I drive sympathetically and don't do short journeys. The engine has also been de-EGRed and has a Provent fitted, both of which I believe substantially improve the likelihood of longevity.

Apparently, EGR and EURO spec do not influence longevity, since 50% on the list are factory spec whilst the rest is modified.

I've had every puma! From the earlier direct injection ones in transits right up to the last of them. I've had 2.4tdci transits with a couple hundred thousand miles with ease. I currently have a 2.2 with 224k on it. I had a 2.2 hole a piston with 50k on the vehicle I suspect this was due to a remap I'd usually drove the balls off it but I was experimenting with how much mag I could get out of it and it over fueled and holed this piston.

The Next Meridian Defender Albatross was remapped when the replacement engine was fitted. I've been following their adventure from the start. Good YouTube viewing.
