Transfer box fill plug seized
Doing a routine oil change for the first time on this vehicle. All done apart from transfer box. Oil out, just need to fill. Fill plug completely seized, wont move at all. So far have just tried a 12 inch length ratchet from underneath the vehicle, where its not easy to get any real power.

Any suggestions? Im thinking it might be possible to access from above, through seat box?

Wanted to attched breaker bar, but it wont fit with the handbrake in place. I dont want to be messing around removing handbrake etc.

Any tips would be great, as you can imagine, i cant exactly drive to a garage now the oils out!

Use a 1/2 from under the vehical. Going though the center of the seat box doesn't allow you any more force. It just stops you having to lie on the floor.

I have access from the top on mine. If I can, I'll do it all from above, but, if force is needed, I'll need to go below. Certainly you get no more power from above.

Hi

A tip for the future, though I'm guessing that you now know this - Always undo the filler plug on any piece of mechanical equipment / machinery first before you drain down oil and fluids.. This ensures that you don't end up in the situation you are currently in.

I have had Landies where the transfer and gearbox fillers have been ridiculously over tightened previously. Clean around the plug as much as possible and if any exposed threads spray with penetrating oil or similar. Don't be afraid to use a small breaker bar and crack it from underneath.

Get underneath- lie on the door and use the longest breaker bar that will fit but make sure the plug key is well seated. Brace your feet against something solid if you need more leverage

How are any of your breaker bars fitting with the handbrake in place?
Is there a specific bar i need?

It's very easy and doesn't take long to take the handbrake and backplate off if necessary, but it is seldom necessary.

Where did you get your pipe from? Ill need to get some first.

Use whatever pipe fits. Jack handle that you don't mind bending. But of scaffold tube. But of black iron pipe. Whatever...


But - you stand a good chance of breaking a ratchet by extending the handle.

Are you sure you can't get a breaker on there? A short breaker bar with a tube is a way better idea than a ratchet with a tube.

I bought an 18” breaker bar for this job, but then couldnt get the head in because of the handbrake. I will look at how to remove the handbrake if need be.

Can you remove the handbrake housing without taking the propshaft off?

I don't know why the photo is upside down, but I just measured the tools I generally use -

Obviously your kit is different. I don't think the measurement is unusual for my breaker. I can't be bothered to get another one out, but I suspect it will be similar measurement.

I'm wondering what's "odd" about yours, and thinking that the purchase of another may be simpler than taking the hand break off.
