What is that homologation about? “A Land Rover immobilized is a moral defeat for the driver and bad publicity for the vehicle, […] it's up to you to do justice to your Land Rover!” - Land Rover Driving Technique. -- 2009 2.4 Puma Defender 90 SW 1979 Land Rover Series 3 88" |

This might be a good deal, depending on the price

My 2008 suffered from this. Came to light after six years of ownership. Engine was replaced by Land Rover. As it was six years old, three years out of warranty, Land Rover paid 75% of the cost and I paid 25%. I was happy enough with that arrangement. It was all thanks to the service manager at the maindealer who serviced it,that Land Rover paid 75%. He fought my case and told Land Rover what a stickler I was for getting things done right! He was pushing for 100% from Land Rover but three years out of warranty decided Land Rover against this. Maindealer no longer in business. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel 1992 110 200tdi csw -Zikali 2008 110 2.4 tdci csw-Zulu 2011 110 2.4 tdci csw-Masai |

The blue one for sale with very low mileage has the earlier engine so you'd probably have to eventually replace it.
A good 2.2 Puma is probably a better bet. |

The 2.2 did have a similarly potentially catastrophic problem with the variable displacement oil pump as I recall.
Personally I'd always choose a 2.4 over a 2.2, but that is a matter of personal preference. |

I think that the 2.4 is a good engine. As long as it is serviced using quality oil and decent filters, along with replacement of consumable parts then I see no reason why moon mileage cant be achieved.
A ships engineer once told me that his engines needed 3 things to ensure that they worked as they should and without problem: 1/ Clean fuel 2/ Clean air 3/ Clean oil I carry out a full service every 6 months or 5000 miles regardless of the make or model of the vehicle I own. Jim |

A genuine question, I'm very interested to know. Why do you think a 10 to 15 year old Defender is better everyday vehicle for you, than JLR's best selling current model? I have occasionally considered replacing a late Puma but never made the jump. Thanks. |

lt is indeed a dilemma for me.
l love the old Defenders but l also love my 2022 Defender. My only concerns with the new one are repair costs once it gets older, where with the old one it's not the case. |

In another life that's what i was trained as.. And that is one of the things I picked up very quickly in my brief spell at sea.. All the diesels we ran had a strict running hours and oil change routine and by in large it kept them right..👍 |

I can understand that concern, a vehicle has to be affordable to buy and to run. A recent chat with a farmer driving a new commercial 90 had him ask 'Will you be changing for a new one?' When I said No, he said 'Ah, you say that, you should try one. Once you have, there's no going back.' I'm not convinced there's a worthwhile change for me, currently doing only 12K miles a year spread over 3 vehicles. Jeep Wrangler, new Defender, Grenadier and new Land Cruiser all looked interesting initially but the old Defender still has a charm. |

The mechanic who looks after my Pumas used to work for a Ford main dealer. He holds these engines in high regard. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Bid up to £30,000 That seems to be the ceiling for old Defenders at the moment. The £40,000 ones don't seem to be selling. l've been "watching" a few for months. One has just come down from £36,000 to £30,000 Lovely looking late 2.2 110 XS SW with under 20,000 miles. |
