“Labouring” was the reason I was given but I don’t know exactly, which is why I found the OP’s solution so interesting.
This is from Winchester’s website, both owners I spoke with had fitted uprated gearboxes with transit 6th gear purchased from them:

“ Depending on your wheel size or transfer box ratio you might benefit from fitting the 0.77 lower ratio transit 6th Gear. Fitting the lower ratio can put you in a more comfortable rev range. labouring in 6th is a common cause of mainshaft wear.

Here are a few examples.

Standard 6th gear at 70mph 30inch tyres 2496 RPM
Standard 6th gear at 70mph 32inch tyres 2340 RPM
Transit 6th gear at 70mph 30inch tyres 2614 RPM
Transit 6th gear at 70mph 32inch tyres 2428 RPM”

Allowing any engine to labour is bad, but I rather fail to see how running a shaft faster reduces wear. I suggest that in the absence of scientific evidence people should make up their own minds. Very Happy

Is it not the fact the shaft is moving faster but the increase in RPM pushes it further up than where peak torque is produced 110 Td5 Ex Utilities slowly converting into a pop top camper one day

I can see the benefit of the transit 6th gear option. Higher revs for those on std tyres std tune towing heavy loads on long motorway journeys.

Or those running larger tyres and std tune.

Although it's not something I have ever considered to increase revs as its only top gear.

When I needed more oomph I fitted a 1.3t box.

When I wanted more relaxed causing on a torque engine light vehicle I went 1.003. Cheers

Believe that it has to do with the cyclic loads. If need to maintain the same speed so power on the engine, when using a taller gear, the cylinder pressures need to be higher at lower engine RPM, and the flywheel and clutch plate springs are not able to fully absorb these cyclic loads.

I think same reason the diff pins tend to elongate their respective hole.

Blimey! What is the speed limit there? I don’t think I have ever got near the rev limiter in 6th.



Speed limit is 120 km/h, and by then I'm at 2500 rpm. But there's more power in reserve, and I can't access it without everything shaking itself to death Whistle --

With the extended sump, what quantity of oil does the transfer box take now? --

I suggest you tap the sump as its lower point seats lower than the std drain hole.

And if you install it dry, it is likely you will need a bit more than 3 l of oil. Puma 110" SW
