Yes, as mentioned its a picoscope .. The automotive version as opposed to the labs scope.. But I have a little handheld dso that serves as a multimeter or scope , made by onwon, that is OK for quick checks , without the need to drag laptops out etc 👍 |

Once you have the key you can see if any DTC’s are present and point towards the cam or crank sensors. An absence of DTC’s tends to point to a VCV issue.
Even if no DTCs then you can still check the wiring continuity from each sensor to the ECU with a multi meter, visual check wiring for chafing, check connectors are not damaged. See wiring diagrams three and four on this link https://www.lrworkshop.com/wiring-diagram/...e-controls. Once you have tested / checked the wiring given you have purchased the camshaft and crankshaft position sensors already, I would change the crankshaft position sensor first, see if that rectifies the issue. If not then change the camshaft position sensor to see if that rectifies the issue. |

https://www.picoauto.com/products/automoti...t/overview The scope I've been using up till fairly recently is a 4423...which is a 2 channel automotive scope..i doubt its available now..I've had it years..but the equivalent will be the new 4225A.. the decision will be whether to go for a 4 channel scope , which if you get into this sort of thing is handy, but at the time I couldn't afford one so got a 2 channel which I've only recently changed for a 4 channel.. Pico we're never cheap but the price appears to have shot up in the last few months😳.. Their software is free and constantly been upgraded ..and generally regarded as a top quality product even if expensive to buy the hardware.. |

That 4423 should read 4223...ie the 4000 series 2 channel ...

I see on the haynes manual that you should jack up the front of the car for the CPS change procedure, that's not a must is it? Can't see myself doing this where it is parked at the moment. I'll check the impedance of the sensor first before I change it anyway. Making my Defender great again. (Or trying to at least xD)

I can't see any reason to jack the vehicle for this. I imagine that the manual is suggesting access from beneath but I'd think from above is less difficult (it isn't in an easily accessible position from either).
I don't have a high opinion of modern Haynes manuals (they seem to spend more time telling you not to attempt work, and are now very generic) and would recommend downloading the genuine LR manual form one of the several free.online sources. |

Yeah it's what I thought. Going to the car right now, if the multimeter tells me the sensor is dead then I'll remove it, and if by any luck a teeth is right in front of the hole I'll just swap it directly. If not, I'll have to bring more tool tomorrow to turn the crankshaft somehow before putting the new sensor in.
I'll also check for the LR manual. Making my Defender great again. (Or trying to at least xD) |

You will be doing very well to get a multimeter on the pins, and as I said before how will you know what is good or bad.. it's a 3 pin connector and even with the sensor out and in your hands is difficult to get your probes on the pins..
And whatever you do don't disturb the sensor holder / mounting bracket bolts👍.. |

3pins?! The replacement has only 2 so it seemed pretty straightforward. I am only going to check how bad the placement of the sensor is as right now, I have no clue. Answer in 20 mins Making my Defender great again. (Or trying to at least xD)
