Indicator Stalk
The indicator stalk on my 2002 TD5 is getting very vague and floppy (a bit like me). It was an advisory on the last MOT and has deteriorated since then.

The bay of thieves has Lucas ones at £37.96 and various others going down to £18.88

Obviously Lucas is little more than a brand name applied to products from India and China nowadays and the quality is often questionable.

Anyway, has anyone tried one of the cheaper ones or been able to compare the Lucas ones against the cheaper alternatives?

I recently fitted a Lucas indicator switch from Paddocks..... It works, but is just as vague as the one I took off..... Just hoping that the actual switch contacts are just a little better quality than the cheaper versions

I bought one of the super-cheap copies, it 'works'. But the self-cancelling fails to operate semi regularly. 1990 Defender 110 200TDI Camper - now converted to Td5 power

If you can go for the more expensive unit, your better off. As you will end up buying again with in a matter of months, I had a hazard switch fail on me with in a matter of months too on my 300 TDI, i managed to get hold of a proper Lucas unit. Agreed with Procta, buy yourself OE (Lucas) or genuine if you can. Its false economy otherwise.

Lucas is cheap Chinese/ Indian license made tat. Avoid at all costs.

I fitted one of the cheap £18 ones a couple of weeks ago.
Took it out the box and thought it looked pretty good. All worked as it should.
The box had nothing other than some spurious number on it.
I wouldn’t be surprised if it was identical to the £37 ones, but without printing on the box.
For the amount of bits it is made from, then assembly, and postage, I thought it was a bargain even if it only lasted a year.

Often or not Genuine is Lucas, Lucas is pretty good but all of them aren’t infallible build quality.

Keep an eye on the electrical connectors and that they are tight and secure, they can be a bit loose and pop off, so be sure they don’t come off before fitting.

So if you do find a loose one, take it off and ever so slightly tighten the connector, and then fit so it is secure.

If there is a blue indicator cancelling ring, be sure it’s fitted the same way it came off and also marries with the tangs on the back of the steering wheel if present before final fit.

It isn’t complex, but is annoying if it all goes back together then you need to get back there due to something like I’ve mentioned above.
Only lightly nip up the securing screw as well, they are really good for snapping and then the whole assembly is loose, a single small drip of Loctite 222 might be a good idea too but as I mentioned, the securing screw around the column only needs to be tightened just enough to secure it and no more. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

Cheers guys.

In the end I ordered a Lucas one, however it is in an old style box and so I am hoping that it is a new old stock item and decent quality!

It is due to arrive today!
