It's possible as Y reg ran til 31 Aug 2001 and the first pre-producton 2002 models came out in Feb 2001, yet there's only 15 of them.
Best to check the actual engine number? If its 15P0xxxxA then it's a genuine early one. LR Workshop Find a Defender's history and spec: https://defender.lrworkshop.com |

Hi mate, you mean this number? So it’s definitely a 15p engine? But doesn’t mean it’s factory? Click image to enlarge |

I have seen them in pre “new dash” with 15P sometimes even with the cylindrical fuel cooler.

Just realised yours is the red 90 from the other thread that you bought recently.
Your photo is definitely 15P, but i've looked up your vehicle and the engine number recorded with the DVLA is a 10P, so I suspect the engine has been changed..... but what's interesting is that engine is a very early 15P. If an engine with that number was in a 2002MY vehicle it would have been built around the end of August 2001 (the first 1000 or so vehicles). Most likely its had an early 15P Td5 engine put in it from another Defender, potentially during the galv chassis rebuild? What's the engine number shown on your V5C?

Thanks mate, just searched my landy in the link on your signature, that’s very useful info thank you, yes must have been done when it was rebuilt! Nice to have the improved version of the TD5 engine, I’ve had two other TD5’s in the past both a 10p.. so will see if this 15p gives me less trouble 😂, so far I’ve had to change the alternator and fpr but fingers crossed everything else seems spot on, also treated my self to come genuine forward facing rear seats that I plan to convert early next year when I’ve purchased the conversion kit and interior panels etc as want it to be a proper job. |

Thanks mate, this is my 10th defender over the years and you would think I’d have known the engine number is on the logbook 🤦♂️, it was indeed original a 10p so a nice upgrade done with the later 15p engine, thanks everyone for your help… |

Has the current V5 been updated to show the new engine number ? It is a requirement to do so if engine is changed. If not it could cause issues with the DVLA and your insurance company in the event of an accident etc.
