Coolant temperature readings with Nanocom
I'm touring in France, have connected my nanocom as my engine overheated and temp gauge went to maximum. Since then that has not happened, but nanocom shows temperature range of 95 - 104, with a peak once of 114. During all of this the built in gauge showed normal. Should I disconnect Nanocom and continue, or should I head for the ferry port ASAP? What are the groups feelings?

a puma gauge doesnt budge until 112 deg. expect there is similar in the td5.

is it actually hot, smell hot, feel hot? or is it a sender issue? hoses hard? Cheers

Doesn't smell hot. Hoses feel hard. I measured the resistance of the temperature sender with my multimeter, with engine not running, but reasonably hot it was 230 ohms which I think is about right.

The temp gauge shooting into the red is telling you there is an issue, not that the vehicle is hot necessarily.

So the nanocom is actually telling you the truth. It is something else that it wasn’t happy with.

A garage in the south of France has taken a look, and it was the thermostat not opening. The mechanic did what he called an 'African' repair (and looking at the photos on his garage walls he has a lot of experience of driving his classic range rover in Africa) which involved wedging the thermostat open. The temperature now tops out at 65C, initially there was quite a bit of steam and pressure at the expansion bottle cap which he told me was probably my head gasket or head gone. But this has reduced after driving for a couple of hours to another garage where another mechanic looked it over, and thinks I may have got away with it. We have some weeks still in France so will drive slowly back with the nanocom on all the time monitoring, and work our way back to the ferry at Cherbourg in small stages.
