I did pretty much what you described, ground the heads of the bolts off and then used some needle nose mole grips to pull the insert out. I then replaced these with hex stud connectors I cut down to size and then araldited in place. I cut some notches with a grinder into the stud connector to give the araldite something to get hold of.
I either gripped exposed thread or if it’s just the insert left in there then I went digging, sits about 2mm under the surface. Pull hard enough and they’ll come out! I bought one that the seller wrapped so tightly it snapped the plastic brackets which were intact when posted and all the bolts had seized or stripped. Now it’s got stainless fittings so shouldn’t have to do it again. |

I have had tuff trek, an autohome and also a grp maggalonia and all of them were of but this is by far the best. It's heavy and the MPG has dropped enough to be noticable (20 miles or 30 miles different to an average tank) but i am also 6ft 3, and there is ample space for two in the tent and it is really well built. the fact its a landrover branded one is also what did it for me, i couldn't not buy one Defender 130 HCPU TD5 |
