Puma 2.4 TdCI dashboard amber Engine Light / EGR
Hello,

I am looking for some advice. My 2011 MY Puma 2.4 TdCi has only 20,000 miles since new, and the Amber Engine light is now illuminating. I had the codes checked, and it is due to the EGR valve. The Landrover independent I go to suggested putting some diesel treatment in the tank to see if it goes away as a result.

I also bought some "Lucas" EGR cleaner that one sprays in when the engine is running, but am not clear if I just open the airbox and spray this in or whether I somehow have to spray it directly into the EGR when the engine is running - I don't think the latter is easy or advised ?

The engine no longer makes the 5 Chugging sounds when I switch off the ignition - is this due to the EGR being blocked up ?

Would appreciate some advice on this before I chuck in the towel and book it in for an EGR replacement. I live on an island, so running it for an hour at high speed to see if it clears is not an easy option, although I can go to France on a ferry if this is the best option.

If you don’t fancy having a go just take it to a local garage on the island. It’s a Ford engine so most will have experience changing them. WARNING.

I struggle to see how you can effectively clean an egr valve and pipework without removing it and cleaning and checking ..
I'd be very careful about spraying any sort of combustible cleaner into the intake of a diesel..the engine can run on..it's a bit scary and I'm sure could cause damage..
I know you are low mileage but I'd be removing and checking the valve and the inlet manifold /throttle body while you are there..

Unless you've used it solely for touring off the island, 5000 4 mile journeys will have choked everything up - new EGR and a good clean out and it will be good for another 20000!

In your situation, given you are likely doing many short journeys and will continue to do so. I would remove your inlet manifold and give it a good clean as it will be full of oily soot. Then have your EGR mapped out by BAS, blank the EGR cooler at its input. Remove EGR cooler coolant pipes and join together, then fit a Provent 200 catch can.
Your engine will run much better, will stay much cleaner, will pass an mot as the EGR will be visible and emissions will be fine and you won’t be bothered with any EGR issues ever again.
