I am close to start prepping the roof and order the paint for it.

The question - am I right to say that a 1987 -1988 LandRover had an Ivory White (LRC354) roof? 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

100 % correct.... Ivory White (LRC354)

Changed over in 1990 (ish) to Alpine White
Earlier cars were Limestone..same as the Steel Wheels of the day

Be sure its what you want as its a creamy, yellowy off-white... Never looked amazing

Clemmo Thumbs Up Make today a little better than yesterday but not so good as tomorrow....

Got the original roof out - luckily had not sold it (probably because was too much of a faff getting it out from behind lots of other stuff) as I had replaced it with a smooth roof at some point. Nice to see its corrosion free Cool

Not much doing lately, but got round to prime the roof, and ready for its final coat.

In the mean time had to do some black painting, so figured I could also do a part that was well overdue and desperate to be finished.

where did you get the bolts to rebuild the defender? My dads has had the same treatment, and they have just used some hardware shop job. largest bolts known to man, for some things, lack of washers, or the wrong washers etc. Its a right old mess. I read your thread on your dad's 90 refurbishment Protca, and you do have a valid reason to be annoyed to say the least.

Most of the fasteners, washers, rivets, self tappings etc I source from local Wurth branch.

All of the non critical bolts were replaced with stainless steel, ensured that they are the correct thread size and length, and isolated from the aluminium. Same for washers, all identical size to original.

For critical components they were either replaced with like for like, if grade 8.8, then use 8.8, if 10.9, then use 10.9 also of the same thread, and length. Note that for that era, there were still a few UNF bolts.

When they were very hard to source, or they were in good condition, and not too cheap to buy, case in point the upper A frame bolts, they were cleaned and re galvanized at home.

And some were 'fabricated'. Example the hinge bolts. I wanted stainless (owe, this is one case where I changed from UNC to metic), but could not get domed countersunk philips drive locally. So I purchased pan head M8 screw which I turned and made countersunk.

The only fasteners that I had to order online and paying 3x of what they should had costed where the sealed rivets, as the local Wurth branch did not stock them at that time.

On the funny side of getting my fasteners, when I was putting the rear tub back onto the chassis, I needed several M8*25 bolts, 14 for sure, but I always tend to buy 2x or 3x of what I need to keep my stock (kind of sick yeah, but saves me a lot of trips). So when I ordered them over the counter, and were handed over, I checked the bolts, and I asked the guy behind the counter to replace some of the bolts because they where not all the same. He looked at me with a blank face, and stated "They are all M8*25!". So I showed him the stamping on the head of the bolts, and asked him to replace because of different stamping on the head (different brands) Whistle I thought they would look horrible if different on the rear cross member. I guess I was the worse customer he ever encountered Rolling with laughter

But I am not yet sick enough to align all the hex in exact same orientation Rolling with laughter 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Clemmo Thumbs Up

Been contemplating on this feedback Thumbs Up The creamy, yellowy off-white is indeed a bit too yellowy for my liking too. On the other hand, the Alpine white is too bright and whity and modern looking for my liking.

Today ordered the paint.... so I ordered something else Whistle

Should have enough extra paint to paint the wolf style rims too if needed. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing
