Sorry should of been more clearer, hoping to get time to do more testing now I found out it does not look to vibrate in low gear but want to try diff lock combinations, that may involve props off again etc, the special tool arrived yesterday so should make it simper than the two spanners I was struggling with. Searching for my first Defender...and started just as Covid hit, so talk about timing.

5 months after starting the search I found it, and here is the details

I had similar symptoms - it was related to the transfer box being locked (but I was unawre of being locked).
daft as it sounds - reverse up hill and if the problem exists - try lifting wheel(s) off ground using trolley jack and try again Smile

It’s surprising how often the transfer box can accidentally diff lock or slip out of low or high range.

I personally prefer to change between high and low stationary or ever so slightly rolling definitely not over 5mph.
If you have the diff locked you should have the dash light illuminated, if no then it’s not working.

I’ve had it in high before, but not quite been fully in and you can be driving along and total loss of drive.
Fully engaged into high again and all sorted out, but can really make you think if you didn’t realise it was that.

You should used the low box and diff lock occasionally or it will get seized up, and also the linage needs to be lubed, rarely but still needs to be kept lubed.
A once it a blue moon job but really helps, a nice thick grease works well as it has to last. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

and there lies the problem - diff lock was engaging without the lock light.
if I were to manually put it into lock - hey presto the light works. Neutral

So from what I know by messing the diff lock and high/low are manual leavers, only the light is electronic part.

So which is which on the transfer case? Is it possible to reach over and manually disconnect the leaver and set into position (to test) or not possible? Searching for my first Defender...and started just as Covid hit, so talk about timing.

hi Race.it,

not sure if I fully understand your question(?).
from underneath / but on top of the transfer box there is something similar to a circlip. once removed the lever linkage can be detached from the tranferbox allowing you to manually from underneath more into / out of diff lock. this should enable testing of the diff lock light. Thumbs Up

So after I typed that I found a picture online

Basically I am wondering if when I put in low range for the test the other day diff lock engaged and all was fine in low but high diff lock was off and vibrating.

Thanks for the reply. Searching for my first Defender...and started just as Covid hit, so talk about timing.
