Hi

This was happening to me....coolant was disappearing and there some streaks on the header tank. Turned out to be the head gasket and then the head. Changed the engine to sort it out.

I have also heard of the EGR cooler leaking internally.

I also tried several new caps and a new thermostat that did not work. It also only lost water if it was pushed on a hot day.

well my Puma has done about 5000km and at about 3k km I noticed the coolant level was slightly below the mark indicated on the side of the ball shaped expansion/filler vessel. I thought it might be just where it wasn't fully filled at the factory so I put some distilled water in there ( I'm going to get a bottle of the correct spec coolant tomorrow ).

2k km later I noticed its back at the same slightly lower level again. Is this a leak or just normal expansion out of the overflow ? I had this on a previous car where the full level was always below the indicated one - if you filled to the mark it came out the overflow but otherwise I never had to top it up.

Has anyone else noticed this or had a leak somewhere in the cooling system ? I did a search and couldn't find anything. Thanks

Yes I had this on our 2.4 defender. First the dealer suggested I had been fiddling with the cap of the expansion tank and had put the seal in upside down. Suitably amused I let him ramble on. Then it leaked through the cap again. New cap fitted. It then split the expansion tank. I fitted a new tank and cap and it was fine for months. Now the cap is leaking again. No sign of head gasket problems and it just looks like the normal poor quality Landrover product and parts matched with ridiculous labour ares...yes it's British apart from the Ford improvements and the new parent company, what a product.

There have been a couple of queries on coolant level recently so its interesting to note that its two years since I first expressed these concerns. And since - soon afterwards- I just let it settle to about 10mm below the Full line it honestly hasn't budged since.
