It still vibrates going down a hill in reverse in gear if but not as much as gravity helps.

I think the load is the key part.

Thanks re the handbrake I’ll remember to bolt it back on when I remove the rear shaft Searching for my first Defender...and started just as Covid hit, so talk about timing.

So you recorded the t box moving alot in reverse, far more than in fwd gear and haven't checked mounts yet?

I wouldn't be taking anything off at this stage. Cheers

I have not removed anything yet, working on it mid week is next to impossible, I could do the video part, but rest has to wait till the weekend.

Also need to record going forward. Searching for my first Defender...and started just as Covid hit, so talk about timing.

Sorry for the late reply family things happened then got some bad virus.

So this morning the task was to isolate where my issue was, by following the good people’s of the forum advice

So before we start thought good idea to ensure it’s still happening. Yep it is, set myself on a small incline and in reverse checks to see if it’s vibrating.

So pull into the garage to check propshafts and remove them one by one to see if I could identify the issue.

So I guess this is probibly my issue. Searching for my first Defender...and started just as Covid hit, so talk about timing.

Pinion nut is loose I’d say with that, and probably needs a new seal as well as it’s probably elliptical rather than circular.
Is there any diff oil leaks?

Also, be sure to check the UJ nearest the pinion where that is on that end of the prop, that was what I had.
Failed UJ bearing, the roller bearings had gone in a single cup, that then caused he issue with the pinion and oil leak. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

That has some play, most likely a loose nut. But the spindles are generally quite a good fit, so I hope you have not damaged the transfer case front output shaft.
I believe that LandRover glued the output flanges onto the splines at the factory. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

I have a brand new transfer case (well Winchester gears one) to go in, due to leaks on the intermediate shaft (could not find anybody local to machine the case if I removed it to get the inset put in). so bit the bullet and got a new TC brought a few months ago.

This could just mean it has to go in now. Laughing

Yep ill check the UJ's on all the props whilst off Searching for my first Defender...and started just as Covid hit, so talk about timing.

Did that not vibrate under any load fwd or reverse?

If t box is still rotating under reverse I would be checking drovers side mounting. Cheers

I have both mountings to change brought them in anticipation from lof when I brought a set of brake disks / pads (that I still need to change).

Only vibrates so you could notice when reversing under load (incline)

Going forward no vibration, though if you free wheeled down a hill then added slight load there was a noise but holding the high/low lever removed the noise.

I’ll look at this item first then get to the next item, like they say making mechanics out of normal drivers 😂 Searching for my first Defender...and started just as Covid hit, so talk about timing.

So front prop got removed today, that’s an interesting job. Thinking of leaving it rear wheel drive 😂😂

So the nut was loose, 30mm socket tightened it up, lot looked at the torque for it yet,

Don’t know if they have a lock washer on it, but it was not bent over if it has one.

Debate now is do I go all in and change the transfer case, or just tighten the nut to correct torque and put front prop on, or replace the whole case (it leaks, thought it was on the intermediate shaft as lots of sealent around that, but could if been the front prop shaft flange all the time

prop shaft feels ok on the UJ’s will prob clean that up and re grease anyhow. Searching for my first Defender...and started just as Covid hit, so talk about timing.

If output nut is loose it will leak there.

Front prop isint hard to remove and job made easier with propshaft tool.

Just a nylon no locking tab. Cheers

First propshaft tool fell out of packaging and I received a empty envelope
Second try has been stuck in customs for over a week now

Going to do up the nut to torque think it’s 168nm or something close to that then see if my vibration in reverse has gone
