That seems a bit strange as AdBlue is injected into the exhaust system, after the engine, in order to reduce NOx emissions. So problems in the AdBlue system shouldn't be damaging the engine.

You know, that was what i originally thought, but i was then thinking maybe i'm no expert, lol.
But i did read somewhere how the blocking of exhaust/DPF/CATconverter "type" stuff can damage the engine... but i have no idea what has happened here, only what they said (likely from the dealer). So to be clear, they do not say injection INTO the engine... And that may be why one said it can damage the engine after 10,000km if calibration was not updated, meaning possible build-up somewhere in the exhuast. |

Stay away from the first 2.0 diesel four bangers. Go for a newer six

There were issues with oil dilution on the 2.0 lngenium, caused by incomplete DPF regeneration
Go for a 3.0 litre. No such issues with that engine. lt's a better unit as well, being a 3.0 litre six cylinder and more suited to the Defender. |

Forget the D240 of derivatives of it. They have a habit of throwing timing chains and oil dilution issues. I managed to catch it before it went on my daughter’s Discovery Sport. My neighbour lost his engine because of it just out of warranty on his Evoke. Eiger Grey MY23 D250 SE with bits. Known as Noddy.

The 3.0 I6 is proving reliable for me at least. Mine is an early 2021 70 reg, and was one of the very first 3.0 I6 diesel engines. Now on 29k and only engine related issues were recalls for exhaust bolts and auxiliary belt pulley.
I have seen a few posts around FB and the like saying there have been loads of failures of new Defenders, but I think they are just scaremongering. I’ve not heard of anyone with an I6 having a major failure requiring an engine swap. Or am I wrong? 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV 1966 S2a 109 aka Betsy |

I’ve got a late-2020 D200 3.0 litre on 86k miles and would agree it’s a great engine.
I’ve not heard of any catastrophic failures either. Mine has only needed a sensor in that time and regular servicing (every 10k miles). |

Assume you are having a check on the carsales.com.au website ? I would agree with what is being said in the thread, avoid the 2.0 4 cylinder diesels, especially if you are heading out into the wilds, go with the 6 cylinder in D250 or D300 format .. or if a Petrol floats your boat the P400 6 cylinder.. If you are on Facebook there are a couple of Australian New defender owners groups who can advise in terms of set up for the Australian environment…. My wife wishes we were in Aus! She loves the heat. I'm in NZ, and not a lot of options here yet.
