Whilst I don't like it, the decline in the standard of driving that I've witnessed, seemingly over the last 5 years or so, makes me realise that the less control a lot of people have, the better. It's sad and perhaps driving licence examinations or licence conversions from other countries, should be a bit more stringent, I don't see that happening. But is it though... Sales of new cars are dropping because they have become more expensive and more expensive to insure as they cannot easily be repaired. On the other hand the second hand market is heating up. Maybe there will be a backlash coming where people demand simpler cars that just provide transportation. All this upward trajectory is nice but it needs to be affordable. There are also plenty of examples where technologie progress just stalls because it's good enough. Look at mobile phone, where is the progress with that lately.

On the A3 in the roadworks at Junction 10 on the M25, you enter from the north at (the legal limit) 70mph, it then becomes a 50 mph zone through the roadworks before you return to the national speed limit.
I tried the speed limiter once in wifys Velar and part way through the 50 zone it suddenly dropped to 10 mph!!!!! I very quickly cancelled it. On these new cars will they be able to do this or will they be rear ended? The carnage doesn't bear thinking about. |

I often thought that a device in your car that would let you know when you had a different speed zone would be helpful. Sometimes while driving in a strange area you might not notice the speed limit sign or it could be hidden by untrimmed bushes. Something to tell when you enter that zone would be useful. I don't want it to take control just to inform me. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Spud, on Tuesday i went to Sutton, its inside the LEZ so took the wifes Velar and put the speed limiter on due to all the cameras.
There was one section where it clearly stated on the ground that it was a 20mph zone, the car nav showed it as a 30 zone and only recognized it as a 20mph road once the speed limit signs were shown on poles by the side of the road. Whilst i reduced my speed to 20 before the car caught up there was a to55er in an Audi up my bootlid flashing his lights for me to go faster. This situation will only get worse especially as Starmer and the Davos party will green light the way for councils to do anything within their means to make money from the motorist. |

The proliferation of supposed safety systems and driver aids in modern cars and the consequent deskilling of driving is one of the key causes of the decline in driving standards. There's no longer a need to engage the brain.
I fail to see how these systems can be retrofitted to existing and classic vehicles but fear this could be a device to force older vehicles off the road altogether, something the authorities (and green nutters) clearly want to.do. |

I wouldn't worry about that Blackwolf. You can still ride around on a horse or a steam traction engine if you want. There has always been a general policy of conveying grandfather rights onto existing vehicles, such that they don't have to meet the standards of a new vehicle. Power crazed mayor's and their attempts at low emissions zones are bit of an exception to that, but the principle stands. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

Hopefully the steam engine will be back on the road very soon.
The article in the OP's post does repeatedly assert that the law will mandate retrofitment to all vehicles but the standard or journalism is reassuringly low, so we can hope this is sensationalism and not fact. |

Yup, sign blindness or information overload with road signs is a nightmare sometimes. Plus driving in the dark in unfamiliar places is a concern... I believe the window of tempting fate has now passed, but back in May (30th) at around midnight I was driving to Poole and was on a winding A road in the defender doing there abouts 55-60, came round the corner and was met by a 30mph sign. I jumped on the anchors to slow myself down as quick as could as I know a lot of these main A roads can have cameras, up in the distance there was a forward facing camera which flashed when I was still likely over 30mph, by the time I got up to the camera I wasn't speeding, but I thought the lack of warning of the change in limit was quite staggering... or at least felt it at the time. Conspiracy full circle here: I believe a lot of 'news' articles are actually created by AI, or at least fed into an AI system to be written without any fact checking. You can ask AI to make up any kind of story, AI can even just initiate stories. You can probably create a story generator AI bot and spread loads and loads of garbage. AI will know what ticks people off so all the articles will be click bate to generate some sort of traffic. Soon we will distrust 95% of the information out there and you can only believe a few quality sources or information you actually have acquired yourself I am not into conspiracies, but I am a firm believer that it is not the environment/global warming etc that will kill humanity, it will be social media and AI unhinging civil society and we will be killing each other before the environment ever gets a chance. Obviously I am biased because I drive a Td5 and V8 P38... |
