Rear axle half-shafts (Td5 110 CSW 2005)
Hi all,
Recently bought a pair of h/duty shafts, with the loose drive flanges, circlips and bolts.

The new flanges are thicker and stick out more than the original ones, the result being that the circlip grove will be about 20mm further out than the original grove was. The new shafts are the exact length as the originals.

I'm concerned that this pulls the shaft about 20mm further out from the corresponding splines in the diff. Is this going to be a problem?

Have you got the right drive flanges as the early ones where thicker and the later Tdi onwards are thinner 110 Td5 Ex Utilities slowly converting into a pop top camper one day

I’d be going single piece and be done with all the 2 piece issues, personally. 2008 2.4 110 Utility Station Wagon XS.

Thanks for that - I did specifically tell them it was a 2005 Td5 so def. not a pre Tdi, so I've written back asking them to send the correct ones.

AFAIK the earlier thicker flanges will not fit anyway as the diameter is slightly smaller/bigger depending which way you look at. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

I suggest you remove the oil seal inside the stud (or is it in the axle assembly?) so you run the drive flange and halfshaft in the "wet mode". These will increase the longevity of the new parts.


I did toy with the idea of a pair of those, but I've now already spent £300 + on the shafts and flanges so am stuck with them now.
