What does this baffling statement mean?

I assume the mounting of the pressure plate assembly? You would think dowels and bolt holes would prevent that.

I'll be honest I could've misunderstood or misquoted him.

Spoken to the garage this morning and he's going to disassemble and go back through everything.
At this point I really am stumped though.

Have they tried what I suggested?

It is physically impossible to fit a Tdi clutch plate backwards, the pressure plate wouldn’t clamp up.

Going to ring later to see where he's at and what he's tried.

The clutch cover can be mounted at 3 different angles to the flywheel, so at every 120degree. It does not matter which one you choose. 60degree is exactly half the 120degree. So if it is mounted 60degree shifted, it means the dowel pins are not being used. If that is possible, I am unsure, depends if the 6 bolt holes for the clutch cover/flywheel are equally spaced. What would happen if possible to be mounted that way I am not sure though.

As said before, the design and the location of the springs on the friction plate will not let the cover even get close enough to the flywheel. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

The spigot bush snagged on the way in causing a number of other issues inc damaging the clutch plate beyond repair.

oooh...bu99er...sorry to hear that. Hopefully the garage are doing the right thing thing and are sorting out their issue? They must have been pretty brutal when mating the gearbox to the engine to do that.

Yeh all sorted now. Now extra charge from the garage doing the work and the guy from lof was also more than helpful 👍
