Adding ladder before roof rack

I’m planning on adding some accessories to my new defender with the deployable ladder being one. I haven’t yet decided on what rack to go for so would adding the ladder first mean it would have to be removed to then add a roof rack? Still deciding on either platform or bars.

It all depends on what roof rack you are fitting. Some of the low profile racks may not allow for the ladder.

If you're going to be going for the OEM expedition rack, it needs to be at least partially removed to mount the ladder.
But just out of curiosity: what are you going to be doing on your roof without a rack? Why the ladder?

I used the LR Expedition rack and Molle plates (Powerful uk) then you can mount ladder on either side of the vehicle.

Thanks. Was just wondering if mechanically it would have to be removed before fitting a rack. It’s just a matter of timing as I’m having other things also fitted at LR but just haven’t decided on a rack yet. I’m guessing if I go simple roof bars these can be added with the ladder already in place?

Yes, I've got the ladder fitted permanently and my roof cross bars can go on and off as required. That's on the 110, on the 90 there appear to be 2 versions of the cross bars & as I understand it one set can't be removed once the ladder is in place. Current vehicle: 2020 Defender 110S

I installed my factory rack before the ladder, which was a mistake. I needed to remove the back corner roof rack bracket and then loosen the rest of the rack in order to get the ladder hardware mounted.

So order of operation for a factory roof rack should be:

1. Lunch box/ Ladder
2. Factory rack

For roof bars it doesn't matter the order of operation.
