I have never done it but…….
Heat the shaft with blow lamp, or similar, get it nice and hot, then shove knob on. Heat melts the internals of knob to the thread on shaft. |

Apply some ptfe tape on the gear stick and use araldite. The epoxy does not stick to ptfe. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Thanks guys for the quick responses, some great ideas there:
ickle - you really have no idea of my (lack of) skills! landy andy - as above and I'm not keen to experiment in case it is there forever, plus I don't have a blowlamp and my wife's hairdryer isn't up to the job and is worth many times more than a knob! Dinnu - I like that idea, but initially I am scared by the araldite so think I'll try the ptfe (which I have) as a starter, thanks Otherwise a wanted add for second hand knob, but seriously a new one is little more than the postage, but as there is little new on the truck now I am very loathed to go that route. |

Dont put too many layers of ptfe, just one or two, and wrap it tight so you maintain the thread profile.

You should definitely go 8 ball like I did. Same problem as you on my 300tdi. The pool ball fits perfectly in the hand and adds a bit of cool. https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic92150.html
I was wrong in the thread, 300tdi uses 1/2" UNF for the gear stick. |
