Looking good, you may have mentioned it before and I can’t see it but what version engine and box did you go for and what was it out of? Looks like the n2 and 8hp going by the shifter or do can you get 6 speeds with that style?

Looks great James, just read through the early stages pages start to finish which took a while. Thumbs Up

I think it’s easy to underestimate the time and effort these things take to get just right, along with everyday life getting in the way as well years can go by. Laughing

Have you thought about what kind of exhaust system you’ll go for or have you not quite got to that stage yet?

Sorry, I typed a long reply to this, thought I had posted it and it's now lost!

Thank you, its been a long time in the thinking for the camper element. Seems to have turned out alright though.

The m57 change came about after I did my 90 and thought well that was pretty straight forward and what a difference. The 130 fully loaded up makes for a sluggish beast, hence the 1.3 t box. So m57 seemed a good option. Note though that the 80k 2.4 is sat not going anywhere just yet, along with the manual gbox!

I have a 2.5" downpipe with the mountings for the various sensors.in it which then plumbs into the existing 2.4 2.5" std system with both boxes. Runs a treat like that.

Currently using it as my daily driver to get some miles on her. Tows a dream. Cheers

Well she's going really well.

With roof tent, top box, store draw filled, 80l water tank, fridge, 3 batts and all the other camping stuff she drives so well compared to before. I have found myself using it more as a daily driver lately, one, because its new to me engine and exciting, two, because its soo easy to drive.

Similar economy to previous 2.4 manual of not a little better with normal daily use, better mpg when towing to date.

About 2k miles in so far. Cheers

A good test for the vehicle yesterday a 160 miles towing about 2.5t steady 60 miles an hour gave me engine temperatures around 95° popping up to 98 on a long climb and dropping rapidly once the power had been taken off overall consumption still coming at a healthy 21 mpg when towing about 2 to 3 mpg better than the old 2.4, Mpg normal road routes is 25.9 for the 1750 miles its done with me so still 2 to 3mpg better than 2.4 in normal use.

Much more relaxing to drive and far more responsive too . Cheers

May I ask what fan / rad setup you are using?

I've tried the viscous unit, but found it couldn't provide decent cooling at all.

Gone for massive radiator and electric fans that will hopefully provide cooling for trips to Europe..

Its running an Allisport M57 specific rad and intercooler. Cheers

Good to hear it’s going well. Interested in the air filter set up, looks like you’ve got an adapter on the standard air box? Also are you running a pre filter between the tank and pump. I’ve got the main filter between the pump and the engine, but was considering some sort of filter to protect the pump. Cheers 1999 300TDI 110 CSW BMW 3.0

Marcus at MW4x4 machines supplied the parts for the conversion, brilliant service and great parts. I also ordered the air filter adaptor from him which is whats fitted.

It currently goes to a nugget box - but may change that.

I dont have a pump filter fitted. It goes tank - pump - filter - engine - tank Cheers

Great test for truck fully loaded 4.5hr drive. Really liking the auto matched with this engine. Economy same as 2.4 manual on this trip. All set up ready to go!

So far so good with the conversion.

However, there has been one bug bear, charging.

I have now sorted this but thought i would share the problem first.

Start the vehicle 14.2 or 14.3v direct to battery. output stays at that for however long the vehicle is left in Park and engine running. revving the engine see slight increase then steadies at 14.2. load the vehicle electrically. ac. heater fan 3, heated seats, lights and it stays at 14.2

voltage taken from scan gauge and DVM straight off battery and off stud on alternator. 0.1variation between them.

Move the gear stick to R or D and it drops to between 12.8 and 13.2v and fluctuates around there until the vehicle is turned off. sometimes i see 12.5 and sometimes 13.5 but rarely. my recent 5hr drive and it stayed in the 12.8 to 13.2 range.

the original vehicle had a smart controlled alternator.

i have a VSR (thats clicks in and out alot with this problem) controlling charge to aux batteries.

i have 200W solar feeding the aux batteries and then through to main battery via VSR when correct conditions are met.

So to date no problems starting despite low charge to main battery. (solar providing charge)

problem remains if aux, VSR, solar are all disconnected.
sense wire to alt removal makes no difference to output after alternator has started to produce 14.2v (ie disconnect it prior to start up and alt not excited to produce output)

So what do people think was the problem? Cheers

Time moves on m57 has been superb. Lovely cruising better economy over the 2.4 too. About 6k miles in since conversion now and loving it.

I have been working on cooling of late. Runs at a nice 90deg normal use and loaded up for camping. She's heavy at this point.

I normally sit at 60ish, 1800rpm. Did a couple of spells at 70 2200rpm and she runs cooler by 5 deg or so on head temp at faster speed. So then tried 60 at a lower gear and at circa 2300rpm she's the same 5 deg cooler.

So although pulls 60 and seems happy must be labouring a little and increasing heat. She's 3mpg better at 60 than 70 over a 120mile.motorway run.

So did some investigating. Seems to be a large variation in opening temps on stats from reputable supplier plus a varying degree of how much they open, same brand, 10deg variation on start opening and 8mm variation on how far they open!

Greater flow needed at lower engine speeds is the aim so experimenting with stats now to open early.enough,.but not too early, and have enough flow past. Will also look at electric water pumps. Cheers
