There's quite a few nearly new online under £50,000

l was looking at a 7,000 miles 2023 with Rough and Smooth packs plus other equipment for £51,000. That must be £30,000 below list

After about 4 years a well looked after and serviced one with 25 - 30k miles on the clock should be £25-£30k, at which point I expect there will be a fair bit of interest from classic defender owners that like the Grenadier. At least that’s when my interest will be peaked.

Some will be dealer-registered ex-demonstrators etc.

Some may have been bought by people who didn't realise they're not SUVs and have found out the hard way they don't want a Defender replacement!

I'm not successful enough to know the ins and outs of companies/directors buying brand new vehicles, but could it be a chance to just write off some profits? There is probably some truth in that Thumbs Up Plus of course their less than marvellous MPG returns.

The fact that they don't qualify as commercial vehicles means they attract significant benefit in kind liabilities so business owners are unlikely to be the main buyers.

I think there is some truth in this.

In my opinion, the Grenadier isn't a handsome vehicle. The front style is awkward and the protruding grill, with additional lights, gives it a piggy snout to my eyes. Add to that the ridiculous Jeep Wrangler-esque extended bumper and you have a visually 'challenging' vehicle.

I know I am biased but old, or new, the Defender 110 is a good looking vehicle. Rugged but, and specifically with 2016 and older, a style that both genders can appreciate. Yes it is boxy but there really isn't one angle that doesn't work from a visual perspective - nothing that you have to make excuses for.

To my mind, if the Grenadier had been a brilliant on-road vehicle, with less quality foibles, they may have gotten away with the awkward looks, in the same way Fiat did with the Multipla (a vehicle visually challenging but won owners over on the functionality of it). However, it isn't. It may be excellent off-road and may appeal to the rugged genuine explorer type but that, no matter which way you skin in, is a VERY limited market.

The mass market are unlikely to embrace it because it isn't a good looking vehicle, nor is it currently a great one to drive on-road.

I parked up near a lay driving a black Grenadier recently. She commented on how much she liked the colour of my 90 and I asked her how she was finding the Grenadier. Her quote was: my husband bought it and now I'm stuck driving it. She'd come from a mainstream luxury SUV and was not enamoured by the Grenadier.

I can imagine more than a few people finding themselves in the same situation, bought without an extended test drive, or worse, off launch details and promo photos. Too many SUVs are viewed as statements and Blackwolf mentioned and it isn't hard to see a situation where customers bought into Grenadier and it wasn't at all what they were hoping for or expecting.

Quite a lot of people buy old style Defenders (mainly the Puma variant) and move them on once they realise how different the ownership/driving experience is to a modern vehicle.

There's a steady stream of nice late model Puma 90's and 110's going though my local LR Specialists showroom.
Bought because they look cool and sold after reality sets in.

The old Defender is a tool, designed to do a job. As is the Grenadier, to a point. ln that respect both vehicles are a compromise when used on the road.

My friend biffed £35,000 on a pristine Puma 90 XS SW. l told him he would need to look after it and gave him advice about spraying the crossmember etc.

He did nothing to it and it soon started to look less than perfect. After a year he traded it for a VW Transporter.

These kind of people should buy the new Defender. lt's got the name and looks good. lt's also highly
competent off road, should it ever venture there.

Most won't, although there are exceptions.

l like the Grenadier, except for the front. l ended up with a new Defender Commercial because of the Commercial status with HMRC.
I can't say l love the front of my new Defender either, it doesn't look much like the old one. The side profile is much better.

Hopefully someone will come up with a better front bumper and grille for the Grenadier, like they have with the Jeep Wrangler.
An A-bar makes it look a bit better.
