I’ve been busy as two weeks ago whilst towing a very heavy trailer uphill from Preston on the M6 the engine shuddered and started to smoke and knock. I pulled over to the hard shoulder and slowly made my way off the motorway. I limped home suspecting a damaged piston or ring. So engine out and stripped to find no 2 piston badly scored and the scraper ring broken. The cooling jet was blocked

This dot at the tip of the knife was the culprit. A rebore and a rebuild later
3days work so far and I’ve still got to put the rad and intercooler back in.

All back in and running. Starter motor refused to seat properly and took me two hours of fiddling to get in. Just got to go steady and small journeys to begin with.
The ecu has called for an oil service on first start up. Little does it know the oil is cleaner than it’s ever been. I replaced the oil pump while it was in bits as it was part of the kit bought from lymm engine components (top service from them).

No. The 2.2 needs a feed blocking to fit a 2.4 pump. There is a garage near to me who advertises this swap and he has been very freely giving with time and information on putting geared pumps into a 2.2. He has done it hundreds of times so fairly sure he’s has it right. He showed me all sorts of data on oil pressure he has gleaned when putting different oils into 2.2 and 2.4 converted pumps. Interesting but not at the same time.
The pump was part of a generic rebuild kit so went in. I will probably swap it for a geared one at a later date if this build lives long enough

Busy summer hols again. Many miles covered.
Dash had to come out again to put a new gear on the new wiper motor. Don’t know why but it just ate the teeth.
Overheated on a long drive due to low coolant. Could not find the leak despite having pressure testing gear then the radiator showed its hand and split properly so a new rad and stat went in. Still carrying water as a backup.
Thinking about removing the now defunct egr cooler and cutting that leak potential out of the system

The coolant leak finally showed. Head gasket was leaking so I fitted a new one and full timing kit while the head was off and therefore the timing cover. Done at 149000 It’s so much smoother now it’s back together. This probably occurred due to the big intercooler, remap, de restriction of inlet, exhaust and uprated turbo cartridge.
Cars are making demands of me lately. New def 90 needs a service, 79 vw t2 is mid brake overhaul, 68 vw beetle needs the same due to lack of use and slk Merc will get a gearbox oil change this week. I love it really.
