Clutch spring fell out, or fluid leak, if no signs of leaks or fluid loss then a clutch spring gone is even more likely.
Check the fluid quantity and for any leaks, but if not, it may be a new clutch needed unfortunately. Do you know which one it is? (Brand).

IT's not unusual for the MT82 to get stuck in gear, but it is usually first and is caused by a deficiency in the detent devices on the 1/2 select shaft. I've not hear of one getting stuck in third though.
If you search the forum for "stuck in gear" threads you will find the solution (to the 1/2 problem at any rate). |

I had this issue, difficulty selecting then eventually stuck in 3rd. Had to drive in low range and the smell of burnt clutch filled the air. Had to have the Defender put on a flatbed to the mechanic. When the mechanic opened up the box, clutch was obviously kaputt but was in utter horror when he opened the rest of the box to find the gears ground down with sludge (oil + metal bits from the gears).
Needed a new gearbox, luckily, I remember a friend of mine covered to and auto transmission and contacted him for his barely used MT82. It is now on my truck. The mechanic used a synthetic GL-4 oil but not sure if it's the same spec as Ford rated so plan to source proper oil and do a drain and change. |
