A squeaky tale
Recently I noticed a squeak when the engine was running. Sounded like a idler pulley, but more around the tensioner area. Simples, order a new tensioner and job done. But no. Squeak still present.

I found a spare idler pulley and replaced that. Squeak gone. But....it came back about 50miles later.
Replaced the final idler pulley (twice, first one was faulty). Squeak still present.

Removed the viscous fan and started the car up, still squeaking.
Removed the belt. Squeak gone. But is it a pulley? The other pulley's seemed fine.

I remembered I spotted a spare belt in the shed from a few years ago. Decided to swap the belt.

So far, the squeak has gone.
Tomorrow is a good run up the M6 to J33 and around that area for the North West Stages Rally. This will be a good test to see what’s what. 1999 Defender TD5 110

Inspect the squeaking belt - I have found rubber debris embedded in the valleys of the serpentine belt - the debris shows up as shiny strips, this seems to cause the squeaking as it runs over the pulleys. I got totally fed up with an old 300tdi that was used very rarely, but when used it would do 600 mile round trips, I replaced tensioner, alternator, water pump and front timing case, each time it would run quiet with a new belt for the first hour or so and then start squeaking again, every time caused by a build up of rubber debris in the belt.
I fitted new pulleys throughout to the existing ancillaries and it has run silently for the last six years- my theory is that the old worn pulleys had rust pitting from the lack of use of the vehicle, and the pitting caused abrasion to the belt and the subsequent rubber debris

I have ordered a new belt as the old one I found was a few years old. Dayco belt on the way. 1999 Defender TD5 110

Mine didn't look too bad, but one of the bearings on one of the pulley's failed on the M56, and it was a lift with the AA. I cant remember it costing a lot of money to replace all the pulleys, tensioner and belt. At the time I wish I had replace them sooner. Certainly cheaper than the additional miles charge by the AA to get home.

Recent purchased td5 had a squeak when cold for the first 5-10mins and when turned off has the usual td5 chirp noise. I was 100% sure it was going to be the crankshaft dampener.
Thought I’d just re-fresh the belt, genuine tensioner, 2x new idler pulleys before spend big money on a genuine dampener..
Cold start engine squeak noise gone, result! And also the normal noise when turning off the engine when hot which I had money on being the crankshaft dampener.
Thumbs Up

Great news 👍

You’ll now be able to hear that ‘other noise’ that will drive you mad…
