TD5 HELP!!!
Evening all,

So….5 months back into Defender TD5 ownership and things have took a very serious turn for the worse.

Bought my 2003 TD5 Xs back in October 23, since my ownership, I have spent a LOT of money and time on making it my own alongside preventative maintenance and serving to keep at it best (127k on clock).

Anyhow, long story short, something very very bad has happened! After a dirty weekend at a pay and play in my very shiny defender (yes, bad idea), a sequence of catastrophic failures happened on the way home as follows

1, Felt sluggish.

2, Flicking oil light on idling speed while driving (went away with throttle applied).

3, Very sluggish.

4, Turbo failure.

5, Checked by local garage, oil pressure at cold 2.6 bar, warm 0.5 bar.

6, Metal filings in the oil too.

7, Diagnosis “engine very bad!”

Question is what’s happened??? Has anybody experienced similar?

So it looks like a new engine is a must given the above, unless anyone has anything worth trying before I commit? (Apart from setting fire to it!).

Can anyone recommend someone in Leicestershire/Northamptonshire who can help or go to?

The achilles heel of the Td5 is the oil pump bolt. If that undo itself, you will be left with no oil pressure and catastrophic failure of the engine.

Take the sump off and check the oil pump bolt as mentioned above 110 Td5 Ex Utilities slowly converting into a pop top camper one day

As the others have said 1st order of business would be to drop the sump and check the oil pump bolt.

Second would be to remove the intake hose and check the turbo impeller to see if its intact and if the engine has ingested it.

Not totally local but my father in law uses these chaps and they always have a fair few Defenders in.

Or maybe the engine was old and tired from poor maintenance before you, maybe someone ran it low on oil or maybe it is not the original engine.

Was your oil level correct, did you maybe starve the engine from oil when you were at your pay and play site?

Regardless if you rely on others to keep your Defender in tip-top shape it will be an expensive experience. Not saying you should swap your own engine out, but for sure going to a garage for everything quickly doubles the money you spend on the car.

Thanks.

I have checked the turbo and it is missing some sizeable chunks of the fins.

As for the dreaded bolt, that hasn’t been checked as the garage said it’s very likely the engine has suffered heavy wear and damage.


Don’t really know the best way forward at this stage. Tempted to buy a secondhand turbo and to remove sump and check/replace the bolt and see what happens, just don’t want to waste my time and money if it’s shot.

If your missing vanes from turbo, and metal in oil it certainly sounds engine side’ and passed through the turbo with exhaust gasses. Realistically as I guess it’s a keeper, only one solution…. Rolling Eyes
Engine swap inc turbo. Budget option would be for a known good used swap. Me I’d strip it fix the bits needed, upgrade stuff and happy days Mr. Green
A td5 is usually pretty bullet proof… just regular oil changes and filters.

I would have the same temptation, although I would not get a replacement turbo before taking off the sump and check the oil pump bolt. Depending on the extent of the damage, but you could possibly get away with just a bottom end rebuild. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

If you are after a standard turbo, I have a pair of secondhand ones I am willing to sell. £50 each plus postage.

Hi

So, the same thing happened to me.

My oil filter housing cracked and I lost all the oil. It was supposed to have been checked by the garage when it was in for a service and checked for oil leaks. Turned out to be a crack in the oil filter housing which they didn't see! Confused

Anyway, turbo did the same thing but none of the bits got in the engine. Cleaned all the bits out and fitted a new turbo and the Tank has run fine ever since, that was about 9,000 miles ago.

225,000 and still going strong. So far !

So that’s the worrying thing, I didn’t lose any oil, it’s still at the full mark with very fine metal fillings in!
