I would think the power and power delivery of the engine would play a bigger part of "managed to cause the Defender to skid a few time when pulling away from a junction" than the stock tyres or 4wd system.
TDV6 is sluggish off the line and probably limits torque, it also makes almost 150hp less and is 2 seconds slower to 60mph. Maybe just be more gentle with the throttle pedal in the more powerful Defender. |

BTW - the new Defender and Discovery 5 are built on the same platform and share most major parts bar the bodywork and interior trim. The 4wd systems are the same.

When the D4 had the problem of snapping crankshafts JLR did the amazing 'fix' of introducing a software update to reduce power during pull aways from a standing start.
Did they do the same with the Ingenuim engine? |

Don’t notice any lag on the Ingenium engine pulling away. If there was a software update not sure it worked though. Eiger Grey MY23 D250 SE with bits. Known as Noddy.

Chicken… that is what I thought, and why I was asking here if there were any differences that I wasn’t aware of.
Honestly, not sure it is down to the engine… the tdv6 has more torque than the P400 and it is torque that helps from standstill. Maybe you are right though…. I will know when I put some AT tires on it next year!! |

Markb110… where did you hear about this “software update” to reduce the toque from standstill?
I have been a member of the D3 drum for years (having has D3 and RRS) and have never heard any mention of this. |

If you’ve got an open diff it’s going to be much easier to slip a wheel.
The diff will normally lock up when accelerating exactly for this reason, and as noted the driveline systems are very similar. |

Torque is 442ft-bl vs 406ft-lb. Close enough to not be hugely different. But the petrol is still a lot more powerful and will rip through the rev range faster. Chances are you are probably not at 2000rpm when any slip happens. As it is difficult with an automatic to use large throttle inputs at low rpm, as the gearbox will downshift to keep you in the sweet spot torque wise. |

l've had something similar in my new Defender D250
l had to cross a muddy field and progress seemed slow, almost as if the wheels were spinning, in fact it almost got stuck. This was not in keeping with the reviews which showed the vehicle making light work of similar conditions. The transmission was in default "Comfort" mode so l changed it to "grass gravel snow" immediately the Defender started to pick up speed and had no further problems crossing the field. l wonder if in the default "Comfort" mode the 4wd system is less active? |

My d250 will squeal a tyre from standstill if i've got plenty of lock on and a heavy right foot (AT tyres). Not full on drifts, just a squeal (and a chuckle).
