Thanks for the update David. The EGR cooler on the 2.2 is a known issue so useful to know that your indi has pointed to that as the primary cause. I’m assuming they believe a leaking cooler pressurised the engine and the head gasket failed due to that. Given they are changing the cooler I would advise you have a new EGR fitted as they do fail and on the 2.2 are a very fiddly part to replace on there own, but if the HG and cooler are being replaced it’s easy. Note pierburg make the EGR for ford and LR and getting a pierburg boxed EGR is less than half the price, circa £120. The pierburg part number is on the EGR, alongside the ford number. I changed my EGR about 2 years ago, so now thinking I should change the cooler as a preventative measure given your and BaronDefenders experience. |

Thanks Ian! - I have asked the garage if they can also replace the EGR as it makes sense whilst other works facilitate easier (hopefully) less costly replacement.
Just need to win the lottery now to fund it all |

I feel for you David. it’s a labour not parts expense , so even having an indi doing it is going to make a dent in your finances
The only solace is your vehicle has probably not deprecated at all since you purchased it, so the few £k you are spending is far less than other basic vehicles would have deprecated during your period of ownership. |

Thannk you Ian - as you say it is the labour costs that accrue rapidly specifically on a job estimated at 15hrs.
Given the pleasure the LR gives me it is a cost worth paying and is 'relatively' modest when compared to the costs I have spent on upgrading her e.g new suspension, sound proofing, new seats, matting the tub, ...etc Looking forward to having her back and going for a long drive in the country |

Finally have my LR back having had the Cylinder Head Gasket, EGR Cooler, EGR Valve replaced, together with a new Auxillary belt. Not sure why the latter had to be replaced as I had it done on last service in May - nevertheless was replaced under warranty.
Took her for a careful drive for an hour yesterday, keeping close eye on temparatures and not pushing her too hard. Great to have her back I will keep a close eye on coolant use and have acquired some of the Coma Super LongLife Red. I presume a dilution of 50:50 with deionised water is the way to go for future top ups? David |

Yes a 50:50 mix of concentrated coolant and deionised water is correct.
Do you know what coolant the Indi used when they replaced the coolant ? As best to use the exact same if needing topping up, which, by the way, should not need doing now. Ps. Ford and landrover badged coolant is the same and orange in colour. It’s actually Texaco Delo XLC. |

Ian thank you for confirming.
I do not know what coolant the Indie used but will of course ask. Good to know about the Texaco Delo XLC as standard. Thank you for your help, and advice - it has been invaluable! Wishing you and all on the forum a Sparkling Christmas and Memorable New Year! David |

Last year coolant dropped a little bit and as I coulnd't find the Texaco XLC I used "Motul 111051 Auto Cool Optimal" which has the same spec (8WSS-M97B44-D) and is pre-mixed to -37°C. Coolant didn't drop again since then, but thanks for the advice re EGR cooler! |

Glad to hear you got this sorted. It was interesting to read that you had the same issue as me, which points to the EGR cooler’s failure being more serious than some had previously thought. Charlie
