Boost alloys nuts swelling
Hi Folks. Tried to get alloys off to change to steels for laning etc. Nuts on tight as. Also struggle to get 27mm socket off. Used screwdriver to prise off. Wouldn't have worked if I had to have put them back on though. Glad I was putting steels on. Would have been grim trying to change a wheel in a lane.
Have people changed the 2 material nuts for 1 piece? Are they available?
How to stop corrosion - soak them in something prior to fitting?

There are one piece stainless steel nuts available... I cant remember who makes them though

It's not a problem if you also carry a slightly larger socket.

Re corrosion on two piece alloy wheel nuts. It’s a known issue as corrosion between the two components causes the outer case to expand on the nut and you end up needing a circa 28mm socket to remove and refit them. To help prevent this happening I remove the nuts once a year and spray acf50 between the two components of the nut.

Regarding stainless steel replacements which don’t suffer this issue , Wrington nuts make and sell them but they are not cheap at £15 + Vat per nut.

Common issue unfortunately.

Same issue on many Ford’s and even my old Aston Martin. Whoever thought it was a good idea to save money there needs a good talking to.

I tend to just change the nuts regularly, but should probably invest in stainless ones.

I’m wondering how long it will before the LRParts nuts begin to deteriorate?… especially with all the winter muck and road salt on them.

As others have said - sadly a common issue.

When I bought my Defender they were in various states of deterioration and swelling. After struggling with a few of them over a period of time I ordered a replacement after market set from JGS 4x4.

They’ve been on for probably 8 or so years now and are as good as new.

Hi Benny,
They are the same as the originals, or at least the same as the ones I removed, which look to me like a steel nut with a stainless steel thin cover pressed over them.

I did half expect them to start to show signs of deterioration after a couple of years given their predecessors, but thankfully not 👍

To be fair, I think the one piece nuts should completely eradicate the swelling issue, but if I was going down that route then I’d probably opt for Wrington in stainless steel.
