1988 90 v8 3.5 - Throttle Pedal
Hi! So I’m back with a Defender and now have a very special original v8 Smile one thing that’s bothering me is the throttle pedal. Most of the movement on the pedal has no impact on the throttle and it all it happens in a very small space after quite a lot of depression. Now even though I’m used to my old TD5 I assume this is not normal? So my question is what can I do to improve this? I was debating getting a new pedal as it’s rather old and crusty but I’m assuming that won’t actually solve this issue?

Side note it would be good to know any advice on swapping that pedal too - it looks simple but wary not always the case!

Many thanks for help in advance Smile

Is the throttle cable just slack on the throttle lever? Sounds like there is too much slack in the system. On the old 200tdi's you used to be able to adjust the cable slack to accommodate cables that stretch after a while.

Gutt says that could be case yes as I assume throttle should impact the throttle well before the amount of movement I have to put on the pedal. Not sure how I solve that though?

Just adjust the outer cable at the carb end.

If you’ve got a second pair of eyes, have a look at the carb linkage while someone else depresses the pedal. You’ll see how much free play is in the cable instantly. Charlie

Ah ok yes can do that. How do I reduce the slack though?

Thank you!

On the diesels, you would just rotate that encircled part, keeping the rest of the cable steady. It will adjust the position of the outer cable relative to the in er cable, thus taking away any slack.

I will be starting one! Luckily already had the galv chassis and engine rebuild 8k miles ago. But going to try and take it back to how it was originally slowly but surely!
