Engine cleaning
Had to put my Defender in the dealer last week to have a few minor bits fixed - mainly just loose rubber seals round doors that were causing a leak in passenger footwell. The dealer fixed it all no probs, but comented that the "engine is covered in mud". This may be something to do with some serious fun in the last few weeks, and it's true that the engine is filthy. I asked the dealer if they could arrange for it to be steam cleaned etc (at my expense) and they said they don't do it because of risk of damage etc. Fair enough, but how elese can I get it clean? It's filthy, so I really want it done. I haven't got the time unfortunately to spend a day underneath cleaning each part, so thought a steam clean would be ok - am I wrong? Anyone got any recommendations please - I'm based in Kent/ South London if anyone knows of local-ish companies.

Thanks in advance.

The probable reason for the dealers refusing to do it because of possible damage, not to the engine itself but rather all the electrical plugs and connections contained in the engine bay. I personally think you would be opening a big can of future electrical problem whoopass in getting this done. Just my opinion though, Whistle

Once the salisbury silt is in there, you need hot water/steam to get it out. I had my td5 steamed a couple of times, just get someone who knows about land rovers to do it and not an ape.

I can recommend an indy in Wiltshire but not sure about your neck of the woods.

Laughing Laughing Er, yes, well that may have contributed as well.... Embarassed

Thanks for the tips all, and the PM Mark. My personal favourite is the idea of a big clean water splash! Otherwise it looks like I'll have to find some time this weekend... Wink Simon

Bilt Hamber Surfex HD - water based degreaser, brush on where you can get to, spray where you can't, use ordinary hose not power washer, use common sense near electrical connections, start engine afterwards and go for drive for ten mins, it'll be fine

Hi markb110,

Your entry is too fast, but I expect you've been told that before.

Hi Merlin

Cheeky sod Laughing

That's not me, that's my picture of Simon when he may or may not have contributed to the dealers dirty engine comment.

I won't show the picture of the other water hole that lead to water into the second row foot well - guess that's why the seals were being replaced Whistle

after the dealership started listing OFF-ROADING as an issue I started jet washing the engine bay, its been done half a dozen times now and with 54K on the clock and all seems ok, the only issue is the EGR not some thing that a jet wash will affect.

just my 2p's worth.

wait there did I say that the dealership once emptied water out of my water proof ECU Shocked

second thoughts ignore the scouser

The seals were being replaced as they were all coming away from the top of the door frames - same as happened on my Def 90 as well, so luckily this one was not related to that! Laughing To be fair to the dealer they were absolutely fine about it going off road, in fact their actual words were, "it's no problem going off road, that's what they're for...." - I found that quite refreshing! That's in stark contrast to a Porsche dealer I know who told a mate of mine that if he takes his 911 on a track then he'll invalidate the warranty Shocked Simon

Thanks for that James - I've ordered some cleaning/ water displacement products now so will have a go with those first. I may do a 'gentle' wash with the pressure washer first. I presume you just cover any major electrical components first? Simon
