Side lights coming on brake depressed
Hi everyone.

Really hoping that I can get some help with this issue.
2014 110 Utility, 24k miles, very well maintained & looked after.

My side lights have started illuminating when I press the brake pedal. The green side light indicator light on the dashboard, plus the back lighting for the clocks on the dashboard all come on when the brake is pressed, and extinguish when I release the brake. This seems to be intermittent and it doesn't happen every time I press the brake. I naturally assumed that one of the light fittings (most likely one of the brake light fittings) would be full of water - but unfortunately not.

The car has the original light fittings - not LED. I've removed all of the lights and inspected them - paying particular attention to the brake lights. There appears to be some slight deformation in the plastic of the brake light bulb holder on the N/S due to heat. I was able to remove the bulb (which is working) but the plastic bulb seating is slightly melted, making it difficult to remove the bulb. There is also some very slight burning around one of the (male) electric connections at the back of the light housing.

The only recent changes I've made are that I've recently started towing a trailer - so I've been using the electric hook-up for that, and I've had to replace one of the front side light bulbs.

I've inspected the wiring loom as best I can as it rises to the rear lighting clusters and all of the wires appear to be sound with no signs of degrading or tears, etc.

I've owned the car for five years now and have considered converting over to the LED's (as I have with my 90) but I've not had any major issues with these and would like to keep it stock, if possible.

I'd be very grateful for any help. Thumbs Up

I think you've probably found the problem in the NS stop/tail bulb holder.

Likely this is shorting between brake and side. Part number to replace this is XBP100190.

Also change the bulb in this side anyway, it may be faulty and the cause of the overheat.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Thanks to all for your help and advice - it looks like the issue might have been caused by one of the two stop and tail bulbs. I changed both of them for new ones and the issue seems to have been resolved. It's early days but fingers crossed!

Thanks again - I'll update this if there are any further issues. Thumbs Up
