Unfortunately it is just slight smaller than the hole and would literally have to come out stood upright. The injector hole isn’t really and option, I wondering about extraction via exhaust or inlet valve but not sure how far they open etc…?

I've never tried it, but a vacuum seems a good idea to me, perhaps with a small tube attached with tape. I can't imagine you'll get much joy through the valves. Good luck!

If it's gone right in it will be a head off job, I'm afraid. There is no chance of getting it out the way it went in.

If it's a 2.4l engine it's an easy job to remove the intake manifold. Maybe you have the chance to get it out via an open intake valve with a small magnet on a thin wire?!

You can invest much time and thought into how....
the only sure way is Head Off. Not the most difficult job. Just many items to remove /disconnect. Fit a quality gasket set and you are assured all will be ok. Follow technical data for tightening down..( and new bolts x18 required as stretch type) Clemmo Make today a little better than yesterday but not so good as tomorrow.... Thanks for the replies guys.
As I need to take the inlet manifold off to remove the head anyway I may as well at that stage see if I can get it out with a wire and magnet. Does anyone know how far the valve opens i.e. what clearance it gives? If they only open 5mm for example I know that won’t be enough to get the item out in any case. 10mm opening would though. Has anyone taken the head off? If so, how long would this be likely to take if nothing goes wrong. Thanks again |

If you have all the parts/tools you need its a DIY job easily in a day.
Likelihood is you will find something breaks or needs replacing. Clemmo Make today a little better than yesterday but not so good as tomorrow.... Hopefully my existing head should be fine. If I take the head off and obviously replace the injectors, and code them, is there anything else worth doing while I’m at it? (Timing chain etc)
The Defender had no other issues except the injector blow by / seals and is ok 85K. Thanks |

I'd certainly inspect the timing chain etc for wear and consider replacing it. The timing cover's not reusable so will need replacing along with the crankshaft front seal. I'd check the heater plugs because access is much better with the engine partly dismantled. I'd also check the condition of the exhaust manifold stud holes in the head since the threads are prone to stripping and it's easier to helicoil them off the engine.
It's also worth checking the engine harness for chafing (another well-known problem and fire risk) while it's freed from its securing points, and also worth checking the none of the cams have slipped on the camshafts. Apart from all that, just check for wear and tear which should be minimal on such a low mileage engine. |

Does anyone know the valve lift? If it’s greater than 8mm then I may have a chance with wire and magnet / compressed air through injector hole to push it out past valve (slim chance I know…)
Exhaust and inlet valve lift would be brilliant as I cannot find this info from my searches. Again much appreciated guys |

I had a Citroen 1.6 HDI engine that the glow plug tip dropped into the cylinder, I was about to take off the head, I did a search on line and some body said they had the same issue. They removed the injector and used a flexible magnet and managed to remove it. So I thought id give it a try. It worked, the magnet just fits through the hole that the nozzle pokes through. I put the magnet into the cylinder used an air line to move the broken bit. I kept thinking to myself this will never work and the head will have to come off. After many attempts and still to this day I don't know how I did it but out it came. The broken bit was barely magnetic and it had to come out vertically I still have the broken bit taped to the lid of my toolbox. Might be worth a try. Saved me a awful lot of extra work.
