It isn't necessary, however blanking both ends of the EGR cooler can protect the engine in the event that the cooler develops a leak.

If you have blanked off it’s input and output is there any reason you would not join the cooler input and output coolant hoses together to completely bypass the cooler ?

Yes. Firstly it is hard to access on the TDCi, and secondly it makes it extremely obvious that you have illegally tampered with your emissions equipment, which is not helpful at MoT test time nor if you get tugged for a VOSA/Police inspection.
Leave it in place and blanked and it is unlikely that it will be noticed. |
