It sounds like you are loosing the flow to the heater matrix when the temperature starts to rise above the 82 degree mark.. That would equate to the thermostat starting to open and allow flow through the radiator..
The flow to the heater matrix is from a plastic T, off the pipe that leaves the front of the engine block and goes to the top of the radiator by the temp sender unit..
Did you try the bleed on the outlet of the heater matrix to see if that produced a flow through it when you lost the heat..

So all this narrows down to the heater part of the circuit. Have you checked the diverter valve when the whole thing gets hot at 90C o so? You can move it with your fingers etc. Censored strange Puma 110" SW

So strangely when I got to temp to bleed before taking for a drive, I overfilled the coolant to force coolant out the bleed screw. Engine was sitting at 82 degrees.
But every time I bled the coolant it was stone cold and a steady flow!
It would eventually flow out of the bleed screw hot. This happened several times when bleeding.

Maybe a light bulb moment….the car was remapped a while ago and had an EGR delete (only on ecu not manual delete). It didn’t cause any issues with what I have at the moment and was a while back so didn’t even consider it to be the issue.

After reading through diagrams of the coolant system I’ve noticed the coolant runs through the EGR valve!

Could it be that when I originally did the coolant change I’ve drained it from the valve /pipes that run through the EGR and when I’ve tried to refill the coolant, the EGR delete on the ecu is not letting it refill or something to that affect?

I would think not.. A remap of the egr valve will not have any effect on the flow of water through the egr valve or cooler..

I had similar heater problems and it turned out to be a hairline crack in the plastic elbow on the pipe to/ from the heater valve .Can't explain why but rather than leaking it seems to have been sucking air into the heater/heater valve. Replaced the elbow with a brass one ,bled the system and all sorted. Mines a M57 now but dont think that will change anything. Worth checking

I suggest you maybe try and get or borrow a system pressure tester.

Who did the remap? By any chance is it a poor quality high power remap and you’ve blow the head gasket? Can you go back to a standard map again and see if the problem is still there?

The system does hold pressure. I have a vacuum coolant fill kit that pulls a vacuum before refill and it holds at 0.8 bar.
The remap was done a while back and didn’t affect the car negatively. My problems only started when I changed the coolant.
Since the original coolant change I got an overheat problem that still persists on motorway driving.
To try correct the problem I’ve changed Rad, thermostat and waterpump, flushed cleaned and refilled coolant several times.
I now struggle to get heat in cabin and it still overheats on motorway driving (not at idle).
Changing the coolant was the worst thing I’ve done!!

Things to note are - bottom rad hose is always cold, when I bleed from bleed screw coolant comes through cold even when up to temp then eventually comes through hot, RELD HG test is negative.

Any tips on parts to change/things to try?

Was considering taking to the LR dealers for a coolant change to rule out airlock but hesitant as it’s £170!

Does the coolant level always stay the same?

Is the cap working correctly?

Is the EGR cooler fitted to yours? It could be leaking internally when hot.

The only other suggestion I’d have is to remove the expansion tank from the bulkhead and raise it up above the rest of the system. I’ve had to do this on a td5, with extra pipework.

Are you getting it warm and cycling the heater when filling the system?

Have you opened the other bleeders on the system when filling? does coolant flow from them?

A pressure test would be the first thing I’d do and see if it hold under pressure for 30 mins at least.

Coolant remains the same but to be honest I’ve drained and refilled so many times I’m unsure now!
In the early stages of this saga it kept coolant level fine.

Expansion cap has been replaced when coolant was changed.

In terms of raising the expansion tank I assume this is the same as the coolant overfill cone I use where it overfills the system above any outlet to ensure it’s full which it is.

The bleed screw lets coolant flow out when doing the overfill process. Is there more than one bleed port/screw?

When I’m refilling I’m overfilling coolant using the kit, running up to temp with heater on full heat and set to position 2 on blower.

It’s almost like the coolant isn’t getting pumped around the system properly but I’ve recently fitted a new water pump so don’t think it’s that!

Running out of ideas. Assuming the heater matrix has free flow, you could start using the heater inlet hose to fill up, but you will need some pressure to remove any air pocket.

Not sure but does you model have the small oil cooler thermostat?

Until you fix this issue I would use just tap water. Then you can flush the system with distilled water. Puma 110" SW

Did you check the egr coolant is still there and its hoses are not re-routed? Puma 110" SW

Ordered a new heat valve diverter so going to change and flush heater matrix again.
The EGR hasn’t been re routed but fear it’s not got coolant as I emptied system after EGR delete and when refilled it hasn’t got any in? Don’t have enough knowledge on how that works so more wishful thinking!

If that doesn’t work I’m going to take to a Landrover specialist.

Anyone know a good one in the Surrey/Hampshire area?

Thanks

EGR delete means the valve (air/exhaust gases) remains closed and so the PCM does not trigger the malfunction indicator light or check engine. It has no relation with the coolant on the EGR coolant "pipe".

I guess you now there is a procedure described in the workshop manual to follow when changing the coolant.

The fact the heater matrix gets cold when the coolant is hot, may indicate the coolant flows to the top of the system. If so a big air pocket remains in the system. Maybe.

I really hope you solve this issue. Puma 110" SW

Starting to get confusing.. The issues are that your heater matrix is not getting hot.. To me that ia a bleeding issue.. Your main concern is the lack of flow through the radiator when you are up to temp..
I'm wondering how long you have given that before checking the bottom hose..
I've just refilled my system with some flush before I refill wifh antifreeze.. I drove about 6 or 7miles.. The temp gauge reached it's normal half dial position.. When I parked up to do some more work, I checked my bottom hose.. It was still cool and had obviously not had hot water flowing through it..
Had a look with a thermal imagery and it confirmed this.. I had no indication of overheating mind.. Next time if I remember I'll run torque app abd see what it says the coolant temp actually is..
The image from the thermal image camera showing quite clearly the thermostat hadn't opened on this short run
