And a little further info to maybe help you decide if you have an issue.. I'm beginning to think not..
I drained and filled with antifreeze today.. Gave it a good bleed on the heater return hose and also checked the flow on the small bore hose that comes off the top of the radiator to the expansion tank..
I've been for another run.... 12 miles or so.. The temp gauge was up to it's normal half gauge position.. I ran torque and the coolant temp reached 90deg at times..on long runs I've seen it in the high nineties before..
When I got back I checked the bottom hose to the thermostat housing.. It was still cold..
I don't think there is anything wrong.. It just takes a lot more time for the thermostat to start working..

So I changed the heat diverter valve and removed the oil thermostat housing to replace the themostat but on my model puma the thermostat has been removed.
Carried out another full system clean and flush and the problem persists.

Going to book it in with a garage as I’m out of ideas. Will let you know what they say!

Thanks for all the help and suggestions so far 👍

Just wanted to say thanks for all the input on this over the past few months!
Finally the problem is sorted…but at the cost of a new engine!!

Took it in to Safari engines who were great and took the head off to find it had lost compression in 1,3 and 4 and the bores were badly scored! The cost of repair was not cost effective VS just replacing the engine, so that’s what we did!

It’s up and running and back on the road!!

Until this morning when the wipers failed so now have to take the whole dash out to access the wiper spindles 😂
I love defenders!!

Anyway thanks again 👍

Glad you solved it. How many miles on the old engine?

Did you find out why it was getting so hot? Puma 110" SW

It was a 67k engine pulled from V8 conversion project so was running fine before removal so took a gamble and fingers crossed it’s ok for now!

Due to bad compression, bore damage and most likely a cracked head (even though I never bothered to have tested) it was forcing exhaust gas into coolant creating air in the system causing the overheating.

Good that it has been solved!

With regard to the windscreen wipers, it is often the case with vehicles that are parked outside that the wetness on the wiper spindles ensures free movement. As soon as the car is parked in the dry for a longer period of time (e.g. in the workshop), everything dries out, starts to rust and the wiper motor is blocked. "Manual" wiper support and creeping oil gets everything moving again Wink
