Toped up the screenwash in my other car for the first time, and noticed a removable fine plastic mesh filter in the neck of the reservoir, was thinking such a thing might be useful in the Defender, but can't seem to see such a modification on this forum.
Has anybody fitted/mod'ed such a filter or is this a “new” idea: something that slips into the filling neck, with a fine filter to remove any jet blocking particles from the screenwash fill? My Disco 2 has such a filter, and in 21 years and over 200k miles it has never had any crud in the filter. Both the Disco and my Defender (which doesn't have the filter) have regularly over the years had problems with the gunge that forms in modern screenwash fluid blocking pumps, jets, and pipes, and has usually needed the reservoir removed every could of years or so and thoroughly cleaned (and handful of pea gravel in the reservoir, half fill with water, shake vigorously, since and repeat until clean, then recover the gravel for next time).
My conclusion - a filter on the filler is pointless, but a drain tap to allow easy in situ flushing would be great. |

Yes modern screen wash is quite sweet, it is no wonder gunge grows in it. You could always add some white vinegar in from time to time to clean out the gunge.

Thanks all for the thoughts and input; I was hoping to install something "semi-permanent" in the neck of the reservoir.
The reservoir froze solid last December, in the icy snap we had. In May, I emptied, scrubbed and brushed the best I could to remove most of the debris, scale and debris. The fluid was cloudy, with clumpy particles. 
I wish I knew how to remove the Defender wash bottle, but there appears to be lots of hoses and pipes fitted in and around it (2014, 2.2 tdci, 110 Utility with aircon) 
I now use soft water from a dehumidifier, filtered to 63 microns, kept in the dark and VAG screenwash (1 consumable for 2 cars) which contains a specific preservative/anti-bacterial in addition to the alcohol component, I try keep all the containers scrupulously clean. Assuming that all LR screen wash bottle neck diameter is going to be the same for all models then how about part number DMS500010 from a Disco 3

Does anyone know if the neck filter in the above post fits the under wing tank filler opening yet ?
