Hi Jack. So you have a 300tdi 90, so it will have an R380 5 speed main gearbox and when you say D1 gearbox I suspect you mean the Discovery transfer gearbox (LT230) with 1:1.22 gearing (as opposed to the standard Defenders which is 1:1.44 gearing). If you are getting grinding whilst changing gears it is generally a sign that the baulk (aka synchro) rings have worn. This is sometimes made easier by changing gear whilst at higher rpm as it allows the synchro assembly to slip and align on the dog teeth. This is fairly common and the solution is to refurb the gearbox components. Or do you mean that whilst in second or third gears you are getting a grinding noise at the top end of the gear prior to needing to change gear? |

Thanks for the reply and the information, very helpful
The actual gear changes are absolutely fine and it’s just at the top of the gear range for a very short period and continuing accelerating will stop the noise Thanks |

Ahhh ok so it is a grinding at the top end of the gear. Ok, it is unlikely to be anything in the gearboxes as you hear or feel something more of the time. I suspect it could be an imbalanced propshaft and or dry/worn UJ. These can produce noises or feelings that come and go with RPM. An example might be that your rear prop has shed its balancing weight.
Out of interest do you have a lift kit installed on your 90? |
