Likely the indicator/dipped switch is gone. If that is the case, fit a relay. Puma 110" SW

The stalk contacts are prone to failure, there is a lot of power flowing through contacts especially the head lights. There are looms available to help like Boomslang for eg but may be to late in your case?

Thanks for the replies, no I haven’t check for power. Is this a case of using a multimeter and putting each prong on each piece of metal in the plug. I guess if it’s zero it’s the short stalk which is lower down than the indicator/main beam stalk.
Have I got the right one to change? |

never really had the larger stalk fail in all of my time driving defenders (25years) the problem seems to be the contacts melt out in the little switch on the side of the column. Like others have said, theres a lot if amps running through that switch and it runs hot. the brass contacts heat up and sink into the plastic that surrounds them. take the switch out and have a look. you'll see one of the contacts is probably sunk and surrounds my melted plastic.

Update: fitted a replacement (smaller) stalk for side light and head lights. Issue not resolved.
Any body else encountered the same problem.... |

In the fuse box is there a relay for the headlights. Side lights work, head lights don't but I can flash the main beam.

Working through logically.
The off/side/head switch (short switch) is working OK, as when you push the long stalk away, you get main beam. So the output from the short switch in the headlight position, and the input into the long stalk for headlight supply is OK. So the output from the short switch is reaching the input of the long switch (via the headlamp supply relay and the ignition cut off relay). You have output from the long stalk in main beam position, but not in dip position. This suggests, as MK said in the first reply, that the long stalk switch has failed. Or BOTH fuse 15 and fuse 16 under the steering wheel (right and left dipped beam fuses respectively) have failed [unlikely], or a loom wire broken or cut [very very unlikely]. You can test this by removing the 8 pin connector plug from the stalk and switch on the short stalk to headlights. Then on the long stalk loom plug carefully bridge from the blue (headlamp supply input wire) pin 1 to blue/red (dip output wire) pin 6. Use a piece of wire or paperclip. You should get dipped headlights on - if you do the long switch has failed. 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top 2015 D90 XS SW |

Thanks for your help, it is the horn indicator and main beam long stalk.

I think you can swap the switch across from one to the other with a bit of disassembly.
It’s only the grey/blue cancelling ring which is different. The grey one is compatible with the 2015MY steering sensor. 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top 2015 D90 XS SW |
