Mine has 140 000 and the turbo hose split once Afaik EURO4 engines are certified for 70 000 km and EURO5 engines for 140 000 km. Finally, milage is just a number. It doesn't tell you anything about the driving conditions : all terrain, sea water, mining or other workhorses, winter & salt, daily comuter, ... and the driver himself ! Better inspect several vehicles and compare ... |

Like NickMC, Dinnu and blackwolf I’m going to come out as a hoarder:-), however I’ve not gone as far as having a spare engine..mainly as I’m at 65k miles and only do circa 4K miles a year, so given blackwolfs miles that means I have another 50 years to go....so the engine will outlive me !!!!

Wouldn't worry about the longevity of the engine. The government and the "greens" will have us off the road long before the engine gives up. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

My 09 plate 130 died at 112k miles with a hole in no.2 piston. Always been serviced regularly and carefully looked after. No warning it was about to fail. It did have a BAS remap.
When I dropped off at our local independent there were two 2.4s ahead of it awaiting new engines, I’ve since learned of lots more failures, some with shockingly low mileages☹️ |

My 2.4 went pop at 70,000 miles. No remap, correct servicing with genuine parts etc. For the replacement I added a catch can and change more frequently with a better quality oil but I don’t have any confidence in the Ford effort. My new one is remapped with an uprated turbo, I figure if it’s going to destroy itself anyway I might as well try to get some enjoyment from it first. WARNING.

Yep I have two Pumas aswell. Never occured to me that the engine was prone to self destruct. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

People need to remember that forums like this - and garages - are exactly the sort of places where you hear horror stories, as for the most part people go to garages and post tales on forums when something has gone wrong.
You don’t hear about the millions of 2.4 Puma engines going about their business pootling around in Land Rovers, taxis and Transits with no issue, because nobody goes on the internet to tell the world they’ve had an uneventful experience. The same is true of every other car marque on the planet of course. I’ve owned a few BMWs and it’s exactly the same. People terrified on certain engines because there’s a few stories of them chewing up their rod bearings etc, despite there being millions of them out there running fine and dandy. Helps to have a bit of perspective before you scare yourself. |

The highest mileage Defender in the UK is a Puma, although impossible to tell what has been replaced thus far or if it's the original engine!
